| S 2: Hello & Welcome to Tech Guy Forum. Thanks for providing the information. When did the problem begin? Date might be important. Can you associate the onset to a program installation or removal; an update to Windows or your firewall? How often is the signal dropped? For how long does it stay dropped? What do you do to re-connect, or does it re-connect spontaneously? Which router do you use? Brand, model, model #. A product information page would be helpful. What speed; 54, 108, other? Does it matter the distance between the lappy & the router? If the problem occurs every 60 minutes, place the lappy immediately adjacent to the router. Any change? Does the router have 1 or more antennae? If so, does it matter if you change the direction it points / they point? Check w/ your router's manufacturer's support page, for troubleshooting steps. Also, try the steps listed here. http://www.ehow.com/how_5362329_trou...-problems.html Keep us posted. Which protocol? 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11draft N / pre N / other N? Are you using Windows WiFi configurator or the lappy's configurator for wi fi? Do others connect , wirelessly to your router? What happens if you try to connect to a different wi fi network? Which encryption are you using; WEP, WPA, WPA2, none? As a brief test, disable the encryption. Test. Does that improve things?

| thanks for the quick response. I tried a few things which i listed below. still no change. There were a couple of your questions i didn't know how to answer. i will finish the others tomorrow...must goto bed and get some type of sleep. thanks again!! how do i find the info for these: 1. What speed; 54, 108, other? i looked at the speed of the wireless adaptor to r/o needing a driver update but, none of what they suggested as speeds were listed, and some were blank. here's that info: property: value: it was set on this one, 802.11b long and short network address blank receive buffers 256 scan value interval 60 transmit buffers 256 for atheros AR5007EG version 7.6.0.164 2. Which protocol? 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11draft N / pre N / other N? where do i get this info? 3. as a side note, i didn't get to this yet: As a brief test, disable the encryption. Test. Does that improve things? When did the problem begin? Date might be important. Can you associate the onset to a program installation or removal; an update to Windows or your firewall? I think it may have started on 1 of 2 dates 10-21 windows service pack update or 10-29 i installed a 60 day trial od microsoft word (which was an activation of a preinstalled program already on the laptop, so i doubt this was the problem) How often is the signal dropped? For how long does it stay dropped? What do you do to re-connect, or does it re-connect spontaneously? I've timed it, so far in 14 minutes it has lost connection 5 times, then within approx 5 secs it reconnects by itself. i do have the network magic software on all of our computers, but i've had that. it fixes the connection if it happens for other reasons, but this seems to fix itself. i'm think router problems. Which router do you use? Brand, model, model #. A product information page would be helpful. D-Link DIR-615 link to manual: http://www.clickonmacs.com/Support/Manuals/D-Link-DIR-615-Manual.pdf What speed; 54, 108, other? Does it matter the distance between the lappy & the router? If the problem occurs every 60 minutes, place the lappy immediately adjacent to the router. Any change? it has been fine for two years, but i'm 3 feet away while typing right now, and it's happed 3 times since i began a15 minutes ago. Does the router have 1 or more antennae? If so, does it matter if you change the direction it points / they point? i tried to change directions, no change. 2 antennae Check w/ your router's manufacturer's support page, for troubleshooting steps. Also, try the steps listed here. http://www.ehow.com/how_5362329_trou...-problems.html Keep us posted. Which protocol? 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11draft N / pre N / other N? Are you using Windows WiFi configurator or the lappy's configurator for wi fi? laptops' Do others connect , wirelessly to your router yes, direct tv does connect for downloading on demand, and our iPhones both connect via wifi and work perfectly What happens if you try to connect to a different wi fi network? i don't have any other wifi connections in the area that are accessible Which encryption are you using; WEP, WPA, WPA2, none? WEP As a brief test, disable the encryption. Test. Does that improve things? |

If I left anything out you might be looking for, please let me know. I didn't see anything router related. I tried to empty the recycle ben last night and it gave me a message it was corrupted. Now wondering if something else is going...maybe virus? but I have mcafee with windows and mcafee firewall with WEP

Check w / your lappy's manufacturer for a driver that works better with Vista SP2. Some manufacturers provide guidance before upgrading to a Service Pack. As I previously noted, at Toshiba' support site, there are multiple a135 models. Quote:
Do you mean you have 1 router connected to your RR cable modem and a different wireless device connected to your router, such as a "repeater" or a signal boosting device [ range expander ] Please create a wireless diagram, using Paint; save as a .jpg and attach it to your next reply. Quote:
http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=565 Check w/ DLink tech support. Their router might need a firmware update after going to Vista SP2. You could image your hard drive with a product like DriveImageXML , then uninstall Vista SP2 http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm 1st, try updated drivers for your wi fi chipset, from Toshiba; and D Link for their thoughts before uninstalling SP2.
