Could this be an Os problem or is it the PC that is bad?
I am using a Dell Inspiron Desktop 531. OS - Windows Vista Home Premium SP 1. The PC freezes up constantly when using MS Office (Word).

Two nights ago it froze but we were able to reboot and it started to work again.
Later on that night it shut down completely. WE left if for a while then rebooted. it did not boot up entierly but gave the following message :"USB device over-current detected" PC will shut down in 15 secs. It did shut down

We left it like that overnight and then tried to reboot in the morning. The following message came up:"Alert! Previous attempts at booting this system have failed at checkpoint [7FH].

Unplug all USB devices and see if error persists. If not, isolate the USB device.
If yes, mobo may be bad or as simple as upgrade or reinstall BIOS.
Good luck.

Thanks for your reply and I am sorry I had to double post, but my two posts were not answered at all and I really did need the help.
No two different machines
One is a laptop the other a desktop

NicK G - I unplugged all the USB devices and the problem still persists.

Rich M - MS word 2007. With respect to the RAM I cannot remember. I'll have to get the info later when my son comes home

Have any of you come across these two problems before? What did you do to solve it if yes.

Do you think I have a virus? On the desktop I have Norton anti Virus which is up to date. The Laptop may not be up to date but carries Mc Afee.
