Solved: Windows Mail crashing
My Windows Mail has suddenly stopped importing messages. I am on broadband and have been using Win Mail for about 2 years now with no problems. I can still get Web mail successfully.

Win Mail appears to be looking for a dial up connection. The 'Dial up connection box' pops up when 'Send/Recieve' is pressed. Selecting 'Settings/Connections' from this box then 'Settings' the message is 'You are already connected to the Internet'.

Going to Tools/Accounts/Properties causes Win Mail to crash and I have to use 'Task Manager' to end the programme.

I have tried rebuilding Win Mail following the instructions in a 2007 thread and it appeared to rebuild, but the same problem persists.

Any help would be appreciated

Hello & Welcome to Tech Guy forum.

Which Vista; 32 or 64 bit; which service pack?

Which brand, model & model # of the computer or motherboard?

Which 2007 thread? No need for us to refer you to it.

There are 2 suggestions here.

Above link has an easy to follow Guide for setting up Windows Mail.

Contact your ISP(Internet Service Provider).

They provide you your Broadband/Dial-up connection.

Ask them for:

username
password for your Broadband/Dial-Up Account with them

incoming mail server POP3
outgoing mail server SMTP

The above info is required to set up Windows Mail.

ISPs are normally happy to help you set up your Email Account.

Cheers.

Thanks for the reply. The OS is Vista Home Premium, 32 bit, SP2, and I am up to date with updates. The real problem is that WM crashes when selecting Mail Account/Properties/Connection. As soon as you do that WM freezes. I will start ploughing through all the other threads coming up on Google. Should I upgrade to Windows 7?

I suggest that if you upgrade to W7, select the "custom" option which will re-fomat your HDD. BE sure to backup your important data to optical disks, flash drivers or external drives.

Boot to safe mode w/ networking. I prefer the "tap the F8 key during boot" method.
Open WM. If the problem does not occur, something is causing WM to fail.

Down the list of possibilities would be malicious software [ virus, spyware, adware, etc ].

Again, which thread did you try, before posting here?

Have you tried the 2 suggestions to which I referred?

Yes, keep us posted.

You might want to click on "report" and ask a moderator to move your thread to the email subforum, here. http://forums.techguy.org/17-web-email/

Many thanks for the response. I did try your suggestions but nothing would stop WM freezing. I then trawled through many threads located by google and the best advice I came up with was forget WM and download Windows Live Mail (free, but it comes with W7). This I did. It installed and imported all my saved mail and settings from WM with no trouble at all. Strongly recommended! Forget WM which is apparently past of the Vista OS and cannot be un or reinstalled in isolation.

Sorry, I cannot relocate the thread I followed previously that provided instructions to 'Rebuild' WM. Basically, if you delete the WM folder completely, the OS rebuilds it again, which I did but it did not solve the problem.

Anyway, many thanks for the help. I will now mark this thread 'solved'.
