Question black screen/moving cursor/cannot use
Dell inspiron 1525 vista. Lap top. Listening to radio on media center. Shut it down, shut computer down. Next day, computer said corrupted files, repairing. Whole list of changing ID numbers, went on for a while. Now black screen, moving cursor, cannot access anything. Only thing new was usual microsoft automatic updates and I plugged in a mouse controller. Tried windows media cd, no help. Can anyone help me?

Hello & Welcome to TG Forum.

Which Vista? Which SP?

Have you tried safe mode? I prefer the F8 tapping method.

Do you have a Dell Operating System Disk? If so, boot to the recovery environment. To command prompt.
Type: C:
enter
type: chkdsk /r
note space between chkdsk & /r. Note no space between / and r .
enter

Reboot to Windows [ hopefully ]. If failure occurs, reboot to the Rec Env , command prompt
type: c:
enter
type: sfc /scannow
enter

If that fails, consider a repair, from the Rec Env.

I saw XP blow up from a mouse driver.

Thank you. I will check my discs to see if I have one. I do not understand F8 tapping. I turn the computer on and it will try to start but it will not go to the log in page. I will reply if it works or not.

Sorry.

These might be useful.

Methods described here, ex ept for F8 tapping require a successful boot into Windows.

Hi, Thanks for all the advice. The problem is this. After using the media center and shutting it and the computer down the next time I turned it on it said there were corrupt files and it would fix them. After a long time of changing Ids and a lot of other stuff, It went blank. I have tried the F8, reinserting the media disc and the vista disc. The problem is when I turn the computer on it tries to start but will not go to the log in page to put your password in. There is nothing I can do with the computer at all. It is a Dell only 1 1/2 years old and of course out of warranty. It was not a cheap one. It belongs to a college student and it is very frustrating not knowing what to do. Thanks

Thank you all for your help. I re-inserted the media disk and the vista disk. I tried everything and finally held down, cntrl, alt, del and a few other buttons and guess what. The computer seems to have come back. I will not use media again until I check for updates and also run the virus scan. Everyone was kind to answer so quickly. It is great to have a place to ask for help.

If you have solved your problem, please tell us how you did it. Hopefully joeten's suggestion to use VLC allow you to use your computer.

I have used VLC on my XP computers. I have not used it on my Vista & Win 7 computers. I have had no problems with it.

Best of success.
