Is it a legal copy or not? If it isn't we can't help.

Yolanda:
Provide us with as much information as possible.

I have seen the error message you describe caused, on very legitimate computers, by viruses & spyware, as well as corruption [ files messed up ] of Windows.

1. How to access the recovery partition of your computer.

2. How to access the recovery environment.

3. Which version of Vista?

4. Which model & model # is your Compaq?
Look on the bottom for a sticker.

5. If you purchased your computer from a store or business, you might have to discuss your problem with them.

6. Look on your computer for a "certificate of authenticity" sticker.
Here are some examples.
