help removing old applications like Big Fix
I removed Big Fix a long time ago when I got the notice that it has been discontinued. I followed the directions and uninstalled it but remember having dificulty doing so because it seemed to keep coming back on my computer. Finally I was able to uninstall it to where it didn't show up anymore and yet I just noticed that it appears to still have remnants on my computer. Although it is no longer listed in my programs when I click on the windows icon (I'm using Vista) there was still a Big Fix folder under C:/ProgramFiles/ when I went to it with explorer. I just deleted the file (which contained 180 items) but I am afraid there is more hiding somewhere. If I type MsConfig and click the "startup" tab, BigFix is still listed at the bottom of the list (even though it is not checked). I feel that if it were completely removed it would not even be listed here. What gives?

I am also having a similar problem with a gaming program called "Steam". I have attempted to remove it several times but believe that remnants of it are still on my computer as well.

Can someone tell me how to get rid of these things once and for all? I have not searched the registry because I'm always told not to mess in there since I'm a newbie. A step-by-step solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

no I have not tried any programs like this as I am afraid to let things go into my registry when I am afraid to delete things in my registry myself without someone telling me step by step to do it. This is because I am a student and cannot afford to pay someone to fix it if I cause it any damage.

Do you trust this program? Is there not a way to remove these unwanted applications myself?

Did you uninstall BigFix from the Program and Feature? If you do, then it is should already remove from your computer. Now since you still have the BigFix folder and the files that you deleted (180) are the so called fixlet. This were the BigFix store all the fixlet that has been downloaded and applied to your computer.

Now to ensure that all the remnants or traces of BigFix will be remove, you need to run BFRemove tool. BFRemove is a tool that will remove all traces of BigFix from your computer. By running this tool, then reinstalling, you will be able to remove all BigFix files and registry information.

(Note: running BFRemove will get rid of all Fixlet message history, BigFix preferences, and will remove all of your subscribed Fixlet sites -- when you reinstall you will be subscribed to the default Fixlet sites).

1.Close BigFix by right clicking on the BigFix icon (little blue circle with a "b" in it) in the bottom right corner of the screen, and click on "Exit BigFix".

2.Download BFRemove.exe here http://help.bigfix.com/download/bfremove.exe, then click Open when prompted.

3.You will be prompted to confirm removing BigFix, click OK.

4.BigFix will now be completely removed from your computer.

Zyper,

I did uninstall via programs and features; however, If I type MsConfig and click the "startup" tab, BigFix is still listed at the bottom of the list (even though it is not checked).

I will download and run BFRemove and see if this removes it from the list.

Can you by any chance also tell me how to completely remove Steam? I have seen various folders of it on my computer as well even though I uninstalled it.

According to Gateway support site to remove BigFix
Quote:
This can be done via the fixlet you see in BigFix or you can use Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel in Windows XP or Programs and Features in the Control Panel in Windows Vista.
Now after you done it, BigFix should already remove from the computer. And just to ensure that get rid of all Fixlet message, BigFix preferences, and will remove all of your subscribed Fixlet sites you need to run the BFRemove tool. Since you manually deleted all Fixlet message, BigFix preferences there is a chance that when you run the BFRemove tool it no longer detects any traces of BigFix on your computer.

thank you but this does not explain why it is still listed on my startup list. I also am unable to run the BFRemove because the link you provided doesn't work.

hewwo2u2:

As long as you've uninstalled BigFix and then deleted its leftover folder from inside the C:\Program Files folder, don't be concerned any leftover registry entries for it.
