Vista Update error 80245003

1. Disable the Windows Update Service (Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services>Windows update). Double click the Windows update service, press stop the service. Hit OK, leave services window open, you be back here later.

2. At Start Search type “SoftwareDistribution” and it will take to that folder called “SoftwareDistribution”

3. Rename that folder to something like “SoftwareDistribution.old” by the way you do not need to copy or delete any file, just rename the folder and it will work.

4. After you have rename the folder, create a new folder called “SoftwareDistribution” , C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution

5. Them, Go back to your Services>windows update like you did before and press start button.

6. close all the windows that you just open and start your update. It should work just fine if you follow this steps.

Thank you for your response. I am doing fine with your instructions until I got to the point where you say to insert the new file "softwaredistribution" between ShellNew and SoftwareDistribution.old. How do I do that?

Sorry about that, I just copied that from another forum.

Just create a new SoftwareDistribution folder in the C:\Windows folder, it does not have to be "placed"

When you are in the windows folder, just right click on an empty space in the right pane and select New>Folder, then name it.

Vista Update error 80245003
Thank you Mumbodog. My Windows Update is now working. When I could access Win Update there were more than 100 updates to install.

I spen considerable time downloading & installing them. I still have SP1 & SP2 to install. I have tried several times following the KB's that Microsoft posts.

A couple times I encountered, "Your computer was unable to start. Start repair is checking your system for problems." "Do you want to use restore to start?"

Both times the computerer eventually started.

a couple times, including the last attempt, I encountered an internal error, #0x80070078.

I need to get SP1 installed so I can install SP2. Any ideas? I have referred to most of Microsoft's notes to no avail.

Go to the link below, download SP1, save the file to a place that is easy to find later.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Create a manual restore point before moving to the next step.

After it is done downloading and you have made your restore point, restart your PC in Safe Mode, locate the SP1 file and execute it to install, see if will install without errors. If it does, restart the PC when it is done, then do windows updates.

It didn't succeed. I received an error code 80070078. There is an accompamying message, "See http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=101139.

When the computer tries to restart,I am asked if I want to use restore start to repair? I indicate, "yes". This is a lengthy process, but the system eventually comes back up.

SP1 is still waiting to be installed & SP2 is behind it.

Hopefully I have remembered the details clearly & have communicated clearly.

If you go to that link you posted, it says to install and run the system readiness tool, it will look for issues that prevent service packs from being installed.
