Question Solved: IE & Chrome on a go slow...
Hi all,

I've had a new pc since purchase running perfectly ok, computer speedy, internet fine, then a week or two back the Norton (bundled) free trial ended and I had a few issues with the pc not running well after uninstalling it. I downloaded and ran a free tool from Norton to clear the prog' completely and that worked a treat. I then installed Zonealarm and Avast which are both running on my XP laptop and I've been using both with no issues for years.

For the past week I've been having problems with the internet dropping out - but not according to the connection in the taskbar, the computer is showing it has 100% good connection, my laptop which is also using the same broadband is fine, my son has played Wi-fi on our Wii with no problems, yet try and use IE or Chrome and we are waiting ages for any activity.

I'm at a loss.

I've taken the pc back using restore, to previous dates, I've gone back to when Norton was on the machine, used the removal tool from scratch. I've gone back to not having Zonealarm on, I've switched over from having Windows updates install automatically to asking for my permission and allowing me to choose and purposely leaving out the malicious software removing tool as I've heard bad things about that - with no effect.

The computer is fine - it works perfectly well, it is still fast & speedy. It is 'just' the internet - or should I say 'just' IE and Chrome because Outlook is able to d/l new emails without issues, I'm using bittorrents fine, it is just the browsers not connecting to any pages.

I've checked the settings in Zonealarm, everything has access, I've done an online Housecall scan yesterday, there is nothing on the computer, I've got Spybot & Super Anti Spyware installed, I've run checks and cleaned things up. I've run a free registry cleaner.

I'm at a loss!

The only thing I can think of doing now is to keep using Restore and go back and back and back until the browsers work for longer than 10 minutes. And that's the thing - the browsers will work, for a short amount of time and then.......nothing. They are not crashing, they are just waiting and waiting and getting nowhere. All the while the internet icons are flashing to each other, there is activity there - I can collect emails, I can download an album. What is happening????

Any help WILL be greatly appreciated

Thanks!

Lisa

Does anyone have any suggestions on my issue? It is still happening, I'm having to restart my PC every 10 - 15 mins. I'm purposely not doing MS updates just incase it's something there making the internet go slow and I'm turning off Zonealarm and just using vista firewall, yet the internet still goes slow for no apparent reason.

Please help!

Thanks in advance,

Lisa

I managed to sort this one out myself but wanted to mark it as solved in case it is an issue for anyone else in the future.

I right clicked my Avast antivirus and clicked 'stop on access protection'. I tried the internet again (loading a webpage) and hallaluyah it worked! Now strangely enough I turned Avast back on again (via Vista's security warning that popped up to tell me to 'check your computer security') and the internet has 'not' slowed down or stopped even though Avast is once again running! Very odd!

So to recap - if anyone is running Avast antivirus and their internet suddenly slows down, try shutting down the 'on access protection', try your internet again and (load a webpage) and see if it sorts itself out. If all works turn Avast back on again so your protected.
