Can't boot in safe mode
HP Pavilion dv6000 with Vista Ultimate. I tried deleting UMBus Enumerator and UMBus Root Bus Enumerator, rebooting, then installing hardware manually to fix a print spooler problem. On the last restart, the computer wouldn't boot at all. "Repair Your Computer" was highlighted, but did not work, saying to consult an administrator. It won't boot in safe mode, either, but just gets to a point, flashes a blue screen for a second, then starts trying to boot again. Can anyone help?

You probably need to boot from the Vista DVD and reinstall Windows or use the Repair features to restart any missing files:

Thanks for the suggestion. However, my laptop didn't come with Vista DVD's, and we didn't know we had to make our own backup disks. The information said that the repair options were included in the program. But when you can't access them, they're not much good!

If you tap F11 continuously after pressing the power button, you should see System Recovery options with an HP where you can reinstall Windows with keeping your files and data and another which wipes everything and goes back to Day 1. You would have to reinstall programs not on the system when you first set it up.

Thanks, joeten. That first link looks like a good idea. The directions to follow for burning the CD aren't available, though. I didn't really understand the second link. Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks also, Rich-M. I tried to use the F11 to do a system recovery, but all I got was the same screen as when I used F8, startup recovery with "Repair Your Computer" and all the options for the Safe Modes and "Last Known Good Configuration." I tried it several times, but it did the same thing every time.

Rich-M: I did try the F10, but that was used to do a hard disk test. I'm not sure about the other options available with the F10; that's the only one I've used before. Thanks.

joeten: Thanks for explaining the second link. I appreciate your help.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I ended up having to take the computer in for repair again. Today I was told that the new hard drive is fine, but the hard drive controller on the motherboard is the problem. They said the only fix is to replace the motherboard. HP had a recall on the motherboards of these laptops (HP Pavilion dv6000). However, they tell me I will have to pay for a replacement because it's been over 24 months since we bought the computer.

Any thoughts? If we replace the laptop, what would anyone recommend? Vista or Windows 7? What about the brand new hard drive in the now non-working computer? Is it worth sending it back to HP and paying for a motherboard? I've already spend $220+ on repairs plus new hard drive.

Thanks for any input you can give.

Hi I 'am sorry to hear that your controller is the problem,I would try to get them to fix it for free or at least cut the cost since it was a known issue to them,as to replacement if your willing to go that way then look at acer, dell, lenovo,I won't include hp or compaq you have had a time with them

HP is going to get $350-400 for that motherboard repair, I would pass and I would pass on HP Compaq laptops anyway as they have been having the worst frequency of repair the last few years.
Lenovo and Gateway are my choices:

Latest update...computer repair said motherboard was faulty. I had ordered the HP Recovery Disk, so I thought I'd try it anyway. Now I am able to open the internet (I'm on it now) when in Safe Mode, but when not in Safe Mode, the computer automatically shuts down and restarts after about a minute. The computer was shutting down and restarting during the process after the Recovery Disk popped out (FBI Gui Manager was up on the bottom of the screen), but the shutting down and restarting went on all night, about every 5 minutes. Any ideas from you most helpful gurus?
