Solved: slow computer
I know Vista is slow, but this is way too slow. And when it does finally come up I and I start typing suddenly it will stop and for a long time, then all of sudden all the word or letters that I typed will come on. Too much stuff running in the background. How do I get in to find out what and how many programs are running and then how do I know which ones I can stop running and start them from the programs file.

Is the information about your RAM correct? Do you really have 512 MB to run Vista!?! If so, you should know you need at least 1 GB to run Vista but 2 GB is more adequate.

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

Phantom010,
Did I say that? I am sorry I have 4 gigs, This is a fairly new machine, very fast and far too many programs running in th background
Sluggo.
I have 512 running on an old ME machine, I had one gig but someone told me that was too much for an ME machine, they worked best on no more than 512 MB. Totally different machine from the Vista machine

Well identifying the programs was not easy and and this AM I started getting a flash message "low memory" but before I could read it, the message would disappear. Got several of these and now I think I had best run the HiJackThis installer and post it here.

I tried it and I got an error #61 Disk Full Must be some kind of virus here. This is a friends computer he had to leave town for a few days and he brought it over to me to see if I could find why it had started running so slow. Now I will have to see what is on his HD. It should not be full.

The disk was full of trash. Had over 2 gigs Recycle Bin. I cleaned that out. Other problem is can not download update files. That is a problem known to Windows on Vista 64 computers so I sent them Windows the error message 8000FFFF and should hear from them today. I had the same problem on my Vista 64 when I first started it up and they told me what to do, but been so long that I forgot, however they should get back to me today on it.

I think I found the major slow problem. I just checked the HD. It is useable size 293 gigabytes. It has 2.64 gigabytes of free space. 290 gigabytes used. HAhahahha. Most of it he has backed up and I will get him to pickup an external drive and move most of his pictures over there. This is the first time I have seen anyone actually fillup a 300 gig HD. I cannot even get the defrag to work. I have done that when I had a huge 80 MB hard drive so I should have recognized the problem.
Thanks for your great help..
