Vista/IE8 problems: suddenly cannot connect to Internet
Packard Bell desktop, running Vista Home Premium and IE8. All was satisfactory until I moved my PC into an adjacent room. When I then connected everything back up again, I started to see 'Data Execution Prevention' warnings and IE kept crashing. I researched the problem, and think I've sorted it (now I have an inkling what it is), but the computer now cannot 'see' my broadband connection. The BT router is in the original room, and I connect with a 5m ethernet cable, which cable works fine in my laptop so the cable itself seems okay. Yesterday, I took the PC into PC World for them to have a look at it, and the chap there reinstalled drivers. Unfortunately, when I got it back home and plugged back in, the problem's still there. Now stuck, and feeling very frustrated. Can anyone help, please?

Try this, open an elevated command prompt, go to All Programs>Accessories>command prompt, right click on the cmd icon and select run as administratior.

Once the cmd window is open, type the following command and hit enter, when done restart the pc, see if you get a connection.

netsh winsock reset

ipconfig /all <enter>

It does not show your ethernet Local Area connection... hmmmm.

I don't have vista installed currently, but it looks like no LAN has been established.

Windows Network Diagnostics dialogue box says, "A cable is not plugged into the network adapter "Local Area Network". I understood this to be the ethernet cable, which is plugged in.

Am I missing something obvious, here?

1. try another ethernet cable.

2. Look in the ethernet port on the PC, use a flashlight, see if something is blocking contact with the pins.

3. In device manager uninstall the network adapter, restart the PC, it will reinstall it automatically.

4. The ethernet adapter has died or the socket is damaged. They make inexpensive usb ethernet adapters.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions.

Joeten: it is a newly purchased cable (okay, could be faulty) but I tried it in my laptop, after I had switched off the wireless connection, of course. It connected to the broadband router, no problem. So, I assume the cable is okay.
The port may have developed a fault - that is something I will need to get looked at. Thanks.
The driver was reinstalled at the PC shop on Saturday, when I took it in.

Telecom69: thanks for your suggestions. I haven't tried those things as such, but the computer had been disconnected and transported to my local 'PC World' on Saturday, plus, we'd had a scheduled power outage on Friday morning, so I guess that would have covered those actions, anyway.

Mumbodog: thanks, again. I will try your suggestions 2. and 3. later this evening, when I get in.

C.
