Random CPU spikes/Freezing on desktop - Vista
So my computer froze suddenly when I was playing a game, and upon reset, would freeze whenever I logged on. I am on safemode right now, and have been fiddeling with a bunch of things (turning off start up programs, changing settings etc.) and all that I have managed to do is make it not freeze immedietly when I log on, instead it just runs super slow and eventually freezes when ever I log on normally (not safe mode). I've done virus scans and nothing changed when I deleted some old viruses, and the computer is only three months old so I'm assuming it's not hardware.

This has happened once before, and to fix it I uninstalled Norton, but now I am not running any antivirus (I downloaded Avast to scan) and I can't find anything which would cause a conflict like Norton did. I also tried uninstalling some windows updates, but that didn't help at all. I'm running Vista business SP2, and before yesterday, the computer was running fast.

As far as I can tell, something is making my programs take up more cpu then normal, as any time I try to use them they spike, and then go down when I'm idle. System restore did nothing, and I don't want to try the factory reset feature.

Okay, I've turned off all non-windows process (and some windows processes) and the computer is running much faster. However, it still crashes whenever I try to do anything that doesn't use much cpu. For example, I can launch firefox, but if I try to navagate anywhere it crashes.

I suspect your computer is still infected. Please go here and download HijackThis.http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ Run it and it will open up Notepad with a log. Copy and paste the log file contents into a message in the Malware forum.

I don't what it was, but it's fixed now. It probably was just a conflict caused by something that didn't like working with vista. Either way, it's fixed now.
