What's listed in the Device Manager under Sound Video And Game Controllers? Do any of the entries have an X, question mark, or exclamation mark next to them?

I'm not positive, but I believe that laptop has Realtek High Definition Audio. If it does, go here to download the current version(6.0.1.6029) for Vista. Download and save the file, close all open windows, then install it. Read the install instructions carefully. In some cases, you need to install the file twice and restart after each install before the audio driver will install.

Use the link that I gave you in post #2 and see if the Realtek driver will install and if you get the sound back.

If you've done a full recovery back to original factory specs and still have no sound, it's my guess it's a hardware problem. It sounds like that laptop has taken a beating, so good luck with the manufacturer getting things fixed.
