I want to reformat my computer. It is slow and I have no need of all the apps I have added over the years.
I am using Windows 7, 4CPU, 3.40GHz, with 512 MB.

I have the original Windows 7 disks.

Thank you

All the apps you added over the years? Windows 7 has only been available since October. And you posted this in the Windows XP forum. I don't know what "4CPU" means, and new computers that come with Windows 7 definitely don't come with just 512MB of RAM.

Did you mean to post that you have Windows XP? There is new, less than a year old operating system out now.....called Windows 7.

if you can run windows 7 with 512mbs of ram i want to see that one.for vista and windows 7 you need at least 1 gig of ram or more for it to run properly.i hope she does mean windows xp and wants to go to windows 7. but she will need a lot more ram to accomplish that.i hope she can clarify this so we can help her.getting rid of old apps is a good start and will free up the hard drive but not give u more ram thats for sure.

What version of Vista? Home Premium? Ultimate? 32-bit or 64-bit?
What version of Windows 7 do you have the disks for? Home Premium? Ultimate? 32-bit or 64-bit?
What is the make and model of the computer? Or was it built from parts? If so, what is the make and model of the motherboard?

You need at least 1GB of RAM for Windows 7 32-bit and 2GB for Windows 7 64-bit, so you'll need to buy and install more memory at least. Are you comfortable doing that yourself?

You still haven't answered all the questions. "HP Computer" doesn't tell me enough about the computer to know what kind of memory needs to be installed or what the maximum is. You have to supply the full make and model of the computer. I also asked what version of Windows 7 you have disks for. You have to provide that information as well.

Welcome to TSG forum.
If you go to Crucial
and use their Memory Advisor tool it will show you the maximum amount and the
correct type of Ram for your computer. This is very good memory and it is guaranteed.
I have bought it for all my computers and have never had a problem.

Your first post says you have "I have the original Windows 7 disks.". What, exactly, do you have and what do you want to install?
