You may have removed the VBS scripting engine, but fixing that would be a diversion.

Drive integrity checks are in order here. Have you run chkdsk to see what it reports?

Also HDTune can be useful.

HDTune (free) will check for bad blocks and also has a "health" report tab

Also to verify the DMA/PIO status of the IDE controllers you need to double click the "IDE Channels" and select the Advanced Settings tab from there.
