My girlfriend is having trouble with her laptop. It's running vista 32 service pack 2. The machine boots and loads windows with no problems. But when the log on screen loads the screen is blank. It is on but it shows no image. While booting the screen shows all the usual images and the windows loading bar but goes black after that. It won't boot into safe mode either, it just restarts and reboots normally after you select safe mode.

The last time it was used there was a windows update so I can only assume that some of the changes made have conflicted with the video settings. Any idea on how to get into windows to revert back to an older state?

I have the same problem. I have found an older "Closed Thread" here that supposedly has a fix, but the link is not any good any more. A temporary Fix is to press "Ctrl, Alt, and Del" keys at the same time. Select Start Task Manager, On the Process tab, end any and all "explorer.exe". Then select "File" (at the top of the window), select New Process, and type explorer.exe. This should get you back up and running, at6 least untill you restart your computer.

So if any one knows where to find the "Fix File", I know I would definatly appreciate it!

The problem I have is that the entire screen is blank before you even get a chance to log into Windows. That is the screen is blank on the log in screen once the computer has booted. And even if you attempt to log in blind nothing happens.

Boot to Vista dvd as if doing an install and then scroll down to bottom of final screen and choose "repair your pc". Startup Repair should get you going. If you have a branded pc and no disks, F8 works for most tapped continuously after pressing power button until you see the same options. If that doesn't do it well you will just have to all do what you should have done in the first place and tell us your hardware or brand name and model number for more help.
