Unhappy lost the sound on my laptop
I have speakers on my laptop which worked fine until I tried hooking up an HDMI cable to the TV set. I could not get the sound to come out of the TV even though hooked up to the TV with the HDMI cables the sound came only from my laptop. After I disconnected the HDMI cables I had no sound whatsoever on my laptop. Anybody out there have any idea what I did? Many thanks

If you can post the model/make of your computer, the operating system you are using, it will help us know better how to help you.

I have two HP laptops with HDMI. When connecting to a TV with HDMI on one I have to also connect an audio cable for sound and on the other I have to activate the HDMI "speakers."

For the latter and for your current issue right click on the Volume icon in the Notification area and select 'Playback devices.' (This is for Windows 7, but I think Vista is the same in this regard.) Also make sure the speakers are not muted.

no sound
I have windows vista
My laptop is a Gateway
Processor AMD turion (tm) 64 X2 Mobile techology TL-60,

My machine is not muted, the only thing I changed for the HDMI cable installation on my computer was in "sounds" it gives me three choices
digital output device (HDMI)
speakers / Headphones and
Digital Output Device (SPDIF out)

I changed it to the first choice, then when I changed it back to Speakers / Headphones the sounds was gone.

Thanks all

So, if you changed it to the speakers/headphones do you actually have anything plugged in for sound? Also, have you gone in to reboot the computer and re-select the sound options?

Cheers,
Kim

No Sound
Reboot was the answer for getting sound on my laptop.

To get the HDMI cable to work properly I also needed to reboot, or you need to attach the cables to your computer and your TV before turning your computer on.

Thanks all, for both of my problems it was a simple reboot - dah!

Ahhh, those "high tech" solutions trip us up so often. I never suspected a reboot was needed for this. Thanks, Kim; you probably have saved me some grief when and if I really start using HDMI.

You can mark this solved using the button at the upper left of the page.

Ha! Man, happens to all of us. It's funny how a simple reboot can right so many wrongs.

Thanks, Terry and Sharonlarin10!
