Question Sluggish WinXP SP3 laptop
Hi,

Could someone help with a sluggish WinXP SP3 laptop? I'm only using this machine for general usage (no hi-end gaming, or high graphics usage). I has been choking up a bit lately, but want to nip things in the bud before it gets unusable. I attempted some of the suggestions that were given to others with the same symptoms as mine, but with very limited success. Some programs are acting a bit strangely lately also, but not crashing... just slow reacting. Internet web sites load slowly too.

Here is my SYSINFO result:
Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3, 32 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz, x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7
Processor Count: 1
RAM: 1014 Mb
Graphics Card: RADEON IGP 345M, 8 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 76308 MB, Free - 39751 MB;
Motherboard: Hewlett-Packard, 0850
Antivirus: None

Thanks in advance!

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties.

What's listed in the Computer: section in the "General" tab?

--------------------------------------------------------

What's the model name and model number of that HP laptop?

If you don't know for sure, advise what the product number(P/N) and/or model number(M/N) on the sticker is.

--------------------------------------------------------

What other "suggestions" have you attempted?

Sorry... about no anti-virus
I installed AVG 2012 anti-virus after uninstalling Norton anti-virus (stopped accepting definition downloads). Here is my current SysInfo:

Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3, 32 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz, x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7
Processor Count: 1
RAM: 1014 Mb
Graphics Card: RADEON IGP 345M, 8 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 76308 MB, Free - 39249 MB;
Motherboard: Hewlett-Packard, 0850
Antivirus: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2012, Updated: Yes, On-Demand Scanner: Enabled

I ran a new complete virus scan, with no threats detected.

In the COMPUTER section of My Computer:
System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

The PC is an HP Pavilion, Model ZE5300

Other suggestions I attempted:
Didn't want to go crazy, but I used msconfig to stop some startup programs; used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall older un-needed programs (I could probably delete more, but not just yet).

I know this machine is not a rocket by todays standards, but it has never run this slow and sluggish.

You didn't reply to my first question in post #3.

I need the information that's in Computer: and NOT in System:

I'm trying to determine if the processor is running at its rated speed or at a slower speed.

--------------------------------------------------------

Here is the support site for the HP Pavilion ze5300 laptop.

It's apparently already maxed out with 1024 MB(1 GB) of RAM, so you don't have the option of adding more RAM.

--------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load.

Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis".

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

The "Computer:" heading disappears, so that is why I missed it (due to an HP ad logo). Here it is:

Let's see what needs to be uninstalled, updated, replaced, or added in that computer.

Start HiJackThis.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

----------------------------------------------------------

You need to run the Norton Removal Tool so it can find and remove the leftover "debris" from Symantec Norton.

Download and save it, then close all open windows first, then run it.

If you're prompted to restart the computer to complete the removal process, do so.

Adobe Reader 8.2.2 needs to be updated to Adobe Reader 10.1.2

CCleaner
Cleanup!
both need to be uninstalled/removed.
Also, do NOT use the file and registry cleaning feature that comes in AVG 2012

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 needs to be uninstalled/removed.

Java(TM) 6 Update 29 needs to be updated to Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.30(6 Update 30)

--------------------------------------------------

That computer is loaded with very outdated programs and suites, and it's loaded with extras and add-ons.

I suggest you browse through the Add Or Remove Programs list and do some "housecleaning".

I following your suggestions for the first 5 items. While it appears there are old and "very outdated" programs, most worked fine until the system slowly started to slow down about 6-9 months ago. I need a lot of those programs. If there are specific suggestions, I'd be happy to consider removing. I did some more house cleaning, but like I said, I use quite a few of these programs. I'm not sure about what "extras & add-ons" I have that could be removed. Again, any suggestions, I'd consider removing.

Thanks for helping so far...

Click Start - Run, then type in

%temp%

and then click OK.

Click Start - Run, then type in

c:\windows\temp

and then click OK.

Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

If a massive number of files are being deleted, the computer may appear to "hang". Be patient and wait for the deletion process to finish.

After it's done, restart the computer.

-------------------------------------------------------

After the computer completely settles down from the restart, start HiJackThis and click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

Save the new log that appears, then copy-and-paste it here.

What external devices do you connect to and use with that laptop?

Did you have any problem using the Norton removal tool?

1) I had NO problems using the Norton removal tool.
2) 98% of the time, I only have a wireless Logitech mouse transmitter plugged into the USB port.
3) Here is the latest HiJackThis log file:

Other than the wireless mouse, you don't connect and use any other external devices with that laptop?

-------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, then click "Do a system scan only".

The scan should finish in 30 - 60 seconds, but may take longer.

After the scan is finished, put a checkmark in these log entries:

Only after you confirm that you've selected the correct log entries, click "Fix Checked - Yes".

The list of log entries should go blank in a few seconds.

Close HiJackThis, then restart the computer.

-------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis again, then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

Save the new log that appears, then copy-and-paste it here.
