You don't have a lot of RAM. Ideally, you'd need at least another 512 MB.

There are still a couple of things we can do to speed up that computer a little though:

How much do you care for your CA antivirus?

I'd uninstall it and replace it with something much lighter, and free, like Microsoft Security Essentials or Avira Antivir.

How to Uninstall CA

If the standard uninstall methods don't work, click HERE and use the tools.

I concur with Phantom010.
Get rid of that system-hungry CA Internet Security Suite and then replace it with one of the antivirus programs that he recommended.

Also get rid of Windows Defender.
There are better free replacements for it that we can recommend.

What's the model name and model number of that Dell?
What's the 7-character service tag number on the sticker?

You definitely need to add more RAM.
We need to find out first though how much that Dell supports and what type modules it uses.

Hi, you could run a free scan at Crucial - to see what is installed.
You need not buy from them, your local Pc shop may be cheaper.

Use the link that blues_harp28 provided you to load and run the Crucial System Scanner.

After the scan is finished and the report is displayed, copy-and-paste that link here so we can view the report.

RAM modules for that desktop are actually pretty cheap.

-------------------------------------------------------

If you've uninstalled CA Internet Security Suite, go to the C:\Program Files folder and make sure the CA folder is gone.

If it's still there, right-click it and then delete it.

Here are the Dell technical specs for the Dell Dimension 4700 desktop.

It supports up to 4 GB of RAM and supports these modules:

DDR2 PC2-3200(DDR2-400)

DDR2 PC2-4200(DDR2-533)

in capacities of 256 MB and 512 MB and 1 GB.

The CRUCIAL scan results shows your desktop has 2 - 256 MB PC2-3200(DDR2-400) modules and has 2 empty slots.

You really should add 2 - 256 MB modules to the 2 empty slots and increase the overall amount to 1 GB.

Better yet, add 4 - 512 MB modules to all 4 slots and increase the overall amount to 2 GB.

The MEMORYTEN site is where I buy most of my RAM modules, so I've linked you to that site for your desktop.

512 MB DDR2 PC2-3200(DDR2-400) modules are currently selling for $9.98 apiece plus shipping.

Let's see what's currently in your computer that needs to be uninstalled, updated, added, or replaced.

Start HiJackThis.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.
