Solved: Blue screen only in Safe Mode Boot
My XP sp3 installation seems to work fine when booted normally, but I get a blue error screen when trying to go into Safe Mode. During the boot, I'll see some drivers load, and then blue screen appears. I know how valuable Safe Mode is, so I'd like to get this fixed.

The error is Bad_Pool_Caller and the stop code is 0x000000c2 (0x00000007, 0x00000cd4, 0x00000000, 0x0000034). The last time I used Safe Mode was several weeks ago when I couldn't get an HDMI Audio Driver to install in Normal Mode, but it would install in Safe Mode, but I don't really know if this is when my problem started. I googled this problem and read that it's usually caused by a bad driver or software, but not much info on how to identify the bad item. And yes, I uninstalled that HDMI driver but it didn't fix the problem. I've been building my own computers for some years now but have never run into something like this. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome.
Fewer drivers load in safe mode and it may be hard to locate the cause.
But see if the Minidump files are saved.
Look in c:\windows\minidump
ZIP them and attach them to your next post.

Right-click the minidump file, select Send To.
Then select Compressed (zipped) Folder.
Windows will compress the file and then save the new zipped file in the same location.

Follow this guide to merge the registry fix, this should replace the damaged registry keys that stop Safe Mode from booting.Windows XP safeboot repair

Be aware that this is often caused by a virus infection so you should run plenty of scans on your system. BluesHarp can help you with that.

Thanks for the replies. I had already looked in the minidump directory and there isn't anything there. I could be wrong but as I understood it, you only get a minidump if the BSOD occurs within Windows. Mine happen before Windows has actually booted, so nothing is logged.

The other reply was interesting and I downloaded the file, which has a .reg file for XP sp3. I installed it ok and then tried a Safe Mode Boot but the problem remains. The error message was the very same.

I've done full virus scans with every tool I've got, MSSE, AVG, Malwarebytes, Comodo and several stand-alone root-kit finders. They didn't find anything.

Having more than one Anti-virus installed - will cause all manner of problems.
Which one is your main AV - MSE - AVG - Comodo?

As the reg fix didn't change anything I would next suggest running a disk check, as follows, and posting the log.


1. Click on Start > type cmd in the search box and enter. At that C: prompt, type chkdsk /r exactly as written here with the gap before the slash, then hit Enter.
2. You will then see a message "Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)"
Type Y for yes, and press enter. Then reboot the computer into normal mode. Chkdsk will start when Windows begins loading again. Let all 5 phases run and don't use or turn off the computer. (The chkdsk process may take an hour or more to finish and may appear to freeze which is normal.)
3. When the Check Disk is done, it will finish loading Windows.
4. Go to Start > Run and type: eventvwr.msc /s , and hit Enter.
When Event Viewer opens, click on "Application", then scroll down to "Winlogon" and double-click on it.
This is the log created after running Checkdisk.
Copy and paste it into your next post.

With respect to the antivirus, I'm not sure which considers itself to be the main one. I've had MSE and AVG, with the Comodo firewall, all running together for a long time now and it never seemed to cause any problems. Besides, would any of them have any effect early in a Safe Mode Boot ?

With respect to the other reply, I did run CHKDSK as instructed. It only ran for about 30 seconds, reported that the disk was clean, and then booted normally. I then went into EventViewer but there was no Winlogon entry dated today. I repeated the who procedure again, with the very same results.

Should I start to consider a no-format reinstallation in XP ? I used to do this all the time with Win98 SE, but I've never done it with Win2K or XP. The thought somewhat intimidates me because if it goes badly and I have to reinstall all my software, I'm going to tear my hair out, and I don't have that much to spare. Any thoughts ?

Something went wrong with the disk check as it should never complete that fast.

I'd say you have been lucky not to have had any problems running two Anti Virus programs together. They are both trying to do the same thing and are more likely to reduce your level of protection than increase it. They can cause conflicts and slow system performance as well. Although it may be hard to believe, you are more likely to get infected when running two AV's than you are with just one.

The Safe Mode problem is most likely due to registry corruption so a Repair Install should hopefully fix it but I would recommend you do not continue to use two AV's.

Make sure you back up all important data and completely uninstall one of the AV's and use these guides below to remove the remnants, then follow the guide for the Repair Install.

To run a Repair Install on XP which has Internet Explorer 7 or 8 installed you will first need to revert Internet Explorer back to IE6 or IE will not function after the Repair.
Follow this guide: Revert Internet Explorer back to IE6
Now check what Service Pack is included on your Windows XP installation disc.
The repair install will revert the Service Pack level back to what is included on the CD, so unless it has SP3 included it will save a lot of time downloading and installing updates, after the repair, if you create a copy of the XP disc with SP3 integrated into it.
Follow this guide to create a slipstreamed copy of XP to include SP3.
SATA drivers need to be included if you have a SATA hard drive, if you don't, simply skip that part of the instructions and only add the Service Pack.
Slipstream XP with SP3 and SATA drivers
Make quite sure you have a record of the XP Product key. It can normally be found on a Product Key sticker on the case of the PC. You may require this after the Repair to re-validate XP.

Follow this guide to run the Repair Install: XP Repair Install
As a precaution, in the event of something going wrong, you should back up all your important data from the hard drive to an external drive or CD/DVD's. If any errors occur during the Repair it may be necessary to run a format and clean install , in which case all data and installed software will be lost.

Well, let's give it a shot. I uninstalled AVG. My browser is Firefox so I didn't have any concerns with IE. I already had a slipstreamed copy of XP sp3 and I knew my product code, and I backed up my data to an external drive. I took a deep breath and did it. Actually, it went pretty well. My heart skipped a beat when the message appeared that "the DTC Service could not be installed", but the installation continued on. At the end, XP booted normally and everything was there and it all worked. Best of all, I was finally able to boot into Safe Mode, so I guess the problem is solved.

Many thanks for all the advice and the handholding. By the way, what is the DTC Service and do I need it ?

Good news - a re-install is sometimes the best option.

You would only need DTC [MS DTC] Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator - if you were passing information across multiple servers.

Excellent news, it cannot always be guaranteed that a Repair Install will fix registry problems but in your case it seems to have done the trick.
