My computer is very old and I realize that may be part of my problem. However, my computer is always grinding away (even when I am not using it). I have seen in a lot of different posts where people have been advised to run that Hijack log, and then copy and paste it here and someone will take a look at it. I am not familiar with the Hijack program and have never used it but was wondering if someone could advise me how to do this and take a look at the file. I probably have a ton of stuff that could be removed, but I am too paranoid to do it without advice. I have previously disabled a bunch of my Startup programs and have also not allowed Automatic Updates on some programs, they must notify me that a download is ready first.

If someone could help me with my old dinosaur of a computer I would really appreciate it!

What do you mean by "grinding away?" Is your computer acting slow?

Click Start, then right-click My Computer.

Click Properties.

Enter that information in your next post.

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

Start HiJackThis.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

You currently have 512MB of RAM installed. To get a significant performance boost, I suggest you upgrade to 2GB of RAM. No matter what software changes we make, the lack in hardware performance is still going to be the main issue here.

Download Crucial's System Scanner and run it. Enter the results in your next post by either taking a screenshot of the window, or writing a detailed account of the results. If you don't know how to take a post a screenshot, instructions on how to do so can be found below.

To take a screenshot,

1- Hit the Printscreen key on your keyboard. This will copy your entire screen to the clipboard. Hitting ALT + Printscreen will only copy the active window.

2- Open Paint (click Start > Run > type mspaint and click OK)

3- Select Edit.

4- Click on Paste.

5- Select File.

6- Click on Save As...

7- Save your screenshot as a JPEG file.

8- Attach the screenshot to your next post.

Also, McAfee is quite the resource hog. As it is a paid service and I don't know how much time you have left for your subscription, I did not advise you uninstall it.

But I do advise that you cancel your subscription to it and instead download and install Microsoft Security Essentials once the subscription runs out.

Microsoft Security Essentials is the best free, light-weight antivirus (in terms of resource usage) out there.

Okay, here is my screenshot as per your request. I know McAfee is a resource hog and I do not actually pay for it. The entire McAfee suite is included in my AT&T DSL package. I do have concerns about removing it as it has been blocking Risky Connections from several countries over the past few weeks. I have had about 5 times the box has popped up from McAfee and told me that it blocked a Risky Connection and they have been from places like Seychelles and the Russian Federation. Would Microsoft Security Essentials provide me with the same kind of service?

Here is the support site for the HP Pavilion a342n desktop.

You should add and save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can readily refer to it when needed.

That desktop came with a 512 MB DDR PC2700(DDR333) module of RAM in one slot and has the other slot empty.

That desktop supports a maximum of 1024 MB of RAM, so you need to add another 512 MB module to the empty slot.

Download and save the free version of

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Just download and save them and DON'T install them yet.

Click Start - Run, then type in

%temp%

and then click OK.

Click Start - Run, then type in

c:\windows\temp

and then click OK.

Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

If a massive number of files are being deleted, the computer may appear to "hang". Be patient and wait for the deletion process to finish.

After it's done, restart the computer.
