Solved: Computer slow to respond to mouse clicks
In addition to being slow to respond to mouse clicks, the OS is slow to start up and shut down, applications are also slow to start, but don't seem to run especially slowly. This has been growing progressively worse over the last several weeks, but I don't remember a specific time when it may have started. AVG which runs every morning at 4 didn't find anything when I ran it again just a bit ago; Spybot S&D did, but the issue wasn't improved. One tech in a closed thread advised using Adaware, but I'm a bit leery of installing a second anti-virus app.

I haven't tried a system restore because I don't know how far to go back, and I don't want to do more harm in the process of trying. I've also thought about performing a Windows Repair, but the Windows CD I have is SP1 which means that I have to download and install all the updates, a tedious, and time-consuming process.

Where would you suggest looking next?

Double-click MY COMPUTER to open its main window.

What are the drive names and drive letters listed there?

------------------------------------------------

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties.

What's listed in the Computer: section in the "General" tab?

------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save

HiJackThis 2.0.4

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load.

Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis".

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

Do NOT install Lavasoft Ad-Aware.

Go to "Add Or Remove Programs", then uninstall Spybot - Search & Destroy.

You should replace AVG 2011(which is outdated anyway) with a lighter and more user-friendly and less problematic antivirus program, such as Microsoft Security Essentials 2.1.1116.0.

Does that computer stay on all the time?

Is the computer's hard drive divided in 4 partitions: C and D and E and F?

Are the I and J drives associated with 2 external hard drives or 1 external hard drive in 2 partitions?

--------------------------------------------------

The processor is running at its rated speed and has NOT throttled down to a slower speed - which would be one reason for the slowness.

--------------------------------------------------

The startup load is very bloated - which is one reason why that computer is running slow.

--------------------------------------------------

Adobe Reader 10.1.1
needs to be updated to 10.1.3

AVG 2011
should be uninstalled and then replaced with
Microsoft Security Essentials
which is lighter on system resources, more user-friendly, not problematic, and well recommended here.

Java(TM) 6 Update 22
Java(TM) 6 Update 7

both need to be uninstalled. Only the current version(6 Update 31) is needed.

Spybot - Search & Destroy
needs to be uninstalled.

* Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.61.0.1400(free version)
needs to be installed.

* SUPERAntiSpyware 5.0.0.1146(free version)
needs to be installed.

*After they're installed and their definition files are updated, a quick scan needs to be run with them, then everything they find needs to be selected and removed.

--------------------------------------------------

I suggest that you stop using and uninstall
CCleaner
TuneUp Utilities 2011

and any other cleaner/optimizer/booster/tuneup/tweak utilities that you have before they wreak havoc with your computer.

You should replace AVG 2011(which is outdated anyway) with a lighter and more user-friendly and less problematic antivirus program, such as Microsoft Security Essentials 2.1.1116.0.

Does that computer stay on all the time?

------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry, didn't find this message until just several hours ago. Ad-Aware won't be installed. Spybot S&D, and AVG have both now been uninstalled at your suggestion. Microsoft Security Essentials was installed, and has been running for about 4.25 hours with freshly (4/17/12) updated definitions. Gauging from the progress bar, it appears to be 80% or 85% complete. I set it to run a full scan. Yes, this computer does stay on nearly all the time. I eat, work, communicate, and sleep (intermittently) in this same chair. I like it to be on when I wake, so I can pick back up wherever I was when I konked out. Maintenance such as defragmentation is performed when I'm most likely to be asleep. Thank you for your persistence in helping me solve this.

Go here to download and save AVG Remover(32bit) 2012, then close all open windows first, then run it.

It's designed to find and remove all the leftover "debris" from the AVG uninstall.

Restart the computer, if prompted to, so the removal process can finish.

------------------------------------------------------------

There's no need to set your antivirus program to automatically run a scan EVERY day. Once a week is sufficient.

The scanning process will slow down your computer while it's running, and it may interfere with other programs that you open and use.

There are no external drives, and three internal (2 SETA, 1 older & smaller ETA) partitioned thus:

Interesting. How can I resolve that?

Yes, I don't doubt that; there are some programs that don't need to start when the OS does, and I've unchecked them. There are some dll files I didn't know about, and I left those checked. There are tiny utilities (atomic clock, a temp. & weather alert from a local TV station, a calendar, and maybe something else I can't recall at the moment; I also left those checked. There is also a little utility that reminds me of things I have to do at certain times daily, weekly, even annually that has 4 entries. For now, I've left them all checked. Perhaps you'll revisit that list with me as this session is about to close.

I have yet to configure this to run automatically, it I did run it manually once.

Do these get configured to run automatically also?

Those two have been uninstalled. What about Tweak UI, and either Ultra Deframenter or Defraggler? This is already helping; thank you. I'm not sure at what point to call it completed, though.

These steps have all been completed. I'd like to use this for a while now without further tinkering just yet in order to observe the progress through which you've walked me.

You've organized your instructions, and made them sufficiently detailed that, while time-consuming, have been relatively painless and simple. I haven't once had to stop to re-read something a half dozen times, and still feel clueless. It can't be easy for technicians to approach a series of issues in a way that users who are at a wide variety of computer literacy can understand, and it's rare that one pulls that off so successfully as you do. I am both grateful, and impressed. Please enjoy your gold star, or if you have too many already, pass it along to your young'n.

The dip stick's not quite touching the oil yet, but things are definitely improving. Listening to internet radio (Pandora), there are still intermittent, jarring breaks in play. Occasionally, I can type several words before any of them appear on my screen. The mouse shows the biggest improvement in that, while there may be a delay between mouse click and action taken, it's not nearly as bad as it was, and I don't feel like I have to click the mouse several times to provoke something to happen.

In case they are of use to you, here are the files you asked to see in your first response.

Computer:
Intel (R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU
E4600 @ 2.40GHz
2.40 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM

You misunderstood what I said about this. There's nothing to resolve.

Both lines show "2.40 GHz". That means the computer's processor is running at the speed that it should be running and that it has not throttled down to a slower speed - which would have a negative impact on speed and performance.

If it had throttled down to a slower speed, the number on the bottom-most line would be smaller than "2.40 GHz".

-----------------------------------------------------------

Just so you don't get a false sense of security, partitioning the hard drive to save and back up personal data is not a good idea. If the hard drive dies, all partitions will be lost.

If you have important and irreplaceable personal data that you don't want to lose, you should save and back it up to an external USB hard drive or to CD-R's/DVD-R's or to both.

-----------------------------------------------------------

We can stop "tinkering" for now, if you want to. When and if you decide to continue on, submit a new HiJackThis scan log.

I see. Yes, I did misunderstand what was meant by what you said. That's much clearer now.

I do have a lot of data I don't want to loose, graphical kids of things that I painted that I would never be able to replace, even if I had the time, business correspondence, custom scripts that I rely on to keep my small business running properly, and so on.

I use the data partition so that all my email files, all my graphics files, those vital scripts, and other odds and ends that are of utmost importance to facilitate backups to my adult son's machine. His important data files are likewise backed up to my data partition. That system is as safe as an external drive system; both would fail if there were a fire. 4shared is offering 15GB of storage space free, and I want to look into that further as an additional and/or alternative backup system. That would provide me with more than enough storage space to back up my data, though not for the executable application files stored on the same disc. Those, of course, are easily recovered from the web.

I didn't use "tinkering" in a derogatory way. It's a word I use when doing something that I don't know a lot about, but enjoy doing anyway. To my thinking, tinkering is a right brain activity, and when I do, I loose track of the passage of time, and of things going on around me. The scan log has been submitted, and I would very much like to continue at your convenience.

I'm aware that you didn't use the work "tinkering" in a negative way.

Using a company that backs up and saves your personal data on a web server might be a good idea.

----------------------------------------------------------

You're using a LOT of programs and extras that I'm not familiar with, so I don't know how much we can trim down the startup load.

Click Start - Run, then type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down only the names in the "Startup Item" that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list, and make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

The mouse still does have long delays before the command is executed a lot of the time. So, here goes:
  • dumprep 0 -k
  • visicom_antiphishing
  • AdobeARM
  • breakaway (an audio enhancer which needs to startup at boot)
  • MpsOnn
  • DateInTray (tiny calendar utility)
  • dailyorg (reminds me of daily, weekly, and annual events - necessary)
  • liveonline_3932272 (associated with a tiny local thermometer & weather alert utility from local TV station)
  • UpdaterStartupUtility
  • Acrotray
  • NvCpl
  • RunDLL32
  • nwiz
  • RTHDCPL
  • APSDaemon
  • SetPoint (required utility for my Logitech wireless mouse & keyboard)
  • msseces
  • jusched
  • Atomic (maintains accurate time on my machine by comparison to an atomic clock)
  • ctfmon
  • dailyorg (reminds me of daily, weekly, and annual events - necessary)
  • SUPERAntiSpyware
  • DateInTray (tiny calendar utility)
  • liveonline_3932272 (associated with a tiny local thermometer & weather alert utility from local TV station)
  • Paraben's Daily Organizer 3.5 (reminds me of daily, weekly, and annual events - necessary)
  • WPXI Desktop Alert (associated with a tiny local thermometer & weather alert utility from local TV station)
  • Impulse Now
  • MailWasherPro (displays new email at any of my POP3 email accounts; allows me to read, delete, and even bounce messages while still on server. It alerts me when a new email message hits any of those accounts - in use constantly)
  • Paraben's Daily Organizer 3.5 (reminds me of daily, weekly, and annual events - necessary)
  • WPXI Desktop Alert (associated with a tiny local thermometer & weather alert utility from local TV station)
I've commented on the things about which I know. I don't know why so much duplication exists.

All those "reminder" and "alert" apps that you have running all the time instead of starting them when needed may be contributing to the problem.

Anyway, let's get the startup load trimmed down and then see if things improve.

-------------------------------------------------

Go back to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Remove the checkmark in these startup entries:

dumprep 0 -k

AdobeARM

Acrotray

NvCpl

RunDLL32

nwiz

RTHDCPL

jusched

SUPERAntiSpyware

After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Exit Without Restart.

Go to Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK.

Expand the services window so you can see the list clearly.

Double-click on these service entries, one at a time, to open their properties window:

Adobe Flash Player Update Service

FLEXnet Licensing Service

NVIDIA Driver Helper Service

NVIDIA Update Service Daemon

SwitchBoard

If "Startup Type" is set on Automatic, change it to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

After you're done, close the services window and then restart the computer.

When the small System Configuration Utility window appears, ignore its message.

Put a checkmark in the lower left of that window BEFORE you click OK to close it.

Use the computer for awhile and see if things have improved any.
