| task manager & programs running Greetings. I have an older model computer running Windows XP. It has been slowing down progressively over the last few months. Part of the problem, particularly on start-up, is that there are an inordinate number of programs running in the background. At least that is what I see when I look at the Task Manager. McAfee seems to have 4 or 5 programs running all the time. With the memory filling up, it seems it takes a lot for XP to get things ready before usage. What can be done to reduce the number of programs running? How do I know if they are needed or not? Are they other ways to improve the performance, like by increasing the RAM? Would putting photos & videos on an external drive to free up some of the memory help reduce the load? Thanks. Useless |

| What's the brand name, model name, and model number of that computer? How much RAM does it have? ---------------------------------------------------------- Let's see what's auto-starting and running in the background and if any obvious issues need to be addressed. Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4 After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it. Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files. After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load. Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis". Click "Do a system scan and save a log file". When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear. Save that log file. Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here. ---------------------------------------------------------- Let's see what needs to be uninstalled, updated, added, or replaced. Start HiJackThis. Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click on the "Save List" button. Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. | My advice to you is to uninstall McAfee, then download and save and then run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool so it can find and remove its leftover "debris", then download and save and then install Microsoft Security Essentials 4.0.1526.0 to replace it. It's lighter on system resources, it's more user-friendly, and it's well recommended here.  I personally use it in all my computers. ------------------------------------------------------------- |

| McAffee Regarding McAffee, how does your suggestion affect my current subscription? I also get these "McAfee Service Host" errors which bog down the computer. And just last night, I had to run the Chkdsk utility to correct some "corrupted" McAffee files. Will this alternate version help with those issues too? Thanks for you help.... Only the current version(2.0.4) is needed. Java(tm) 6 Update 29 needs to be updated to version 1.6.0.32(6 Update 32) Learn2 Player can be uninstalled, unless you actually need and use it. Mozilla Firefox 9.0.1 needs to be updated to version 12.0 SearchAssist needs to be uninstalled. Spybot - Search & Destroy needs to be uninstalled and then replaced with SUPERAntiSpyware 5.0.0.1148(free version) which works well together with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.61.0.1400 - which you already have installed.
