Question Solved: internet explorer using too much memory.
i'm sort of new to computers and dont know what to do, but everytime i open windows media player 11 and start using it, i get this pop up saying "internet explorer is using 100% cpu or too much memory". i have no idea what that means and why it keeps popping up. i did the disk cleaning, the de-fragmenting thingy and i ran a full system scan with my norton internet security(it said i had no risk). how do i stop this pop up about ie using too much memory and how do i solve it? thanks so much. oh, i'm using windows xp.

What's the brand name, model name, and model number of your computer?

------------------------------------------------------------

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties.

Advise what's listed in the Computer: section at the bottom of the "General" tab - exactly as you see it there.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Run, then type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab.

How many entries in the "Startup Item" column have a checkmark next to them?

Do the following in the order listed.

----------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load.

Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis".

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

----------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

The AMD Sempron LE-1150 processor is running at its full rated speed of 2.00 GHz.

There appears to be 1024 MB(1 GB) of RAM, but 128 MB of it is dedicated to the computer's devices, so it's running Windows and its associated programs with the remaining 896 MB of RAM. You might consider adding another 1024 MB(1 GB) of RAM and increasing it to 2048 MB(2 GB).

Go here and allow the Crucial System Scanner to load and run. After it's done and it displays a report, copy-and-paste the link to that report here so we can go there and view it.

Okay..is this Windows XP and Hold Down
C.A.D. (Cntrl-Alt-Del) Tell me how many Instances of svchost.exe are running?
Also what memory are they using?
Aside from all of this. I STRONGLY urge you to STOP using Windows Media Player 11
No matter what. Many of us use VLC
http://www.vlcapp.com/jump/vlc-free/?pk=520
You WONT regret it and it will usually correct and run 'bad/broken' Media files too!
Uninstall that Windows Media Player at some point too.
Hope this helps.. Most are happy they did!

mxslong:

You left off the top portion of your HiJackThis scan log, but the rest of it appears to be there.

Where is the second log that I requested in post #5? It's needed so we can determine what needs to be uninstalled, updated, added, or replaced.

-------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, then click "Do a system scan only".

When the scan is finished in about 30 - 60 seconds, put a checkmark in these log entries:

R3 - URLSearchHook: SearchSettings Class - {E312764E-7706-43F1-8DAB-FCDD2B1E416D} - C:\Program Files\Search Settings\SearchSettings.dll

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: MediaBar - {0974BA1E-64EC-11DE-B2A5-E43756D89593} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: Search Toolbar - {9D425283-D487-4337-BAB6-AB8354A81457} - C:\Program Files\Search Toolbar\SearchToolbar.dll

O2 - BHO: SearchSettings Class - {E312764E-7706-43F1-8DAB-FCDD2B1E416D} - C:\Program Files\Search Settings\SearchSettings.dll

O2 - BHO: Yontoo Layers - {FD72061E-9FDE-484D-A58A-0BAB4151CAD8} - C:\Program Files\Yontoo Layers Runtime\YontooIEClient.dll

O3 - Toolbar: Search Toolbar - {9D425283-D487-4337-BAB6-AB8354A81457} - C:\Program Files\Search Toolbar\SearchToolbar.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SearchSettings] C:\Program Files\Search Settings\SearchSettings.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [InstallIQUpdater] "C:\Program Files\W3i\InstallIQUpdater\InstallIQUpdater.exe" /silent /autorun

O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe

O20 - Winlogon Notify: efcYRhIb - efcYRhIb.dll (file missing)

After you confirm that you selected the CORRECT log entries, click "Fix Checked - Yes".

Close HiJackThis, then restart the computer.

I'm still waiting for a response to both parts of post #10.

Neither one has been done yet.

I don't know why you're having such difficulty following my instructions.

Please re-read the second part of post #5 and the second part of post #10, then comply with those instructions.

I'm going off-line for the night, so I'll check back here in the morning.
