Solved: Slow-down, sound and video choppy
Over the past year or so XP has been getting progressively slower, and I've tried everything. I use the Classic theme with no animations, I use a wired connection instead of wireless, I don't use active scanning with Avast, I upgrade all my software and drivers, I clear out temporary files and unused programs, I defragment, but still the computer loads slowly, programs load slowly, audio and video are choppy, and the computer is generally slow.

Here's the specs:

Operating System
MS Windows XP Home 32-bit SP3
CPU

After you complete the instructions in post #2, do the following:

----------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Run, then type in

%temp%

and then click OK.

Click Start - Run, then type in

c:\windows\temp

and then click OK.

Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

If a massive number of files are being deleted, the computer may appear to "hang". Be patient and wait for the deletion process to finish.

After it's done, restart the computer.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties.

Advise what's listed in the Computer: section in the "General" tab - exactly as you see it.

I would uninstall - Spybot - Search & Destroy.
It is not the program that it once was and you now have Malwarebytes and Superantispyware installed.
Before uninstalling - open Spybot Search & Destroy disable TeaTimer and then use add-remove programs.

Is it slow online or slow offline or both.

As you have Sims which is a large game you could try upping your memory

It seems slow both offline and online, I haven't noticed any different after connecting to the internet.

The slowness is mostly noticeable when opening programs or using multimedia programs, during normal non-multimedia web browsing it is usually fine, but sometimes when switching tabs or opening new tabs it suddenly slows down.

YouTube is almost impossible to use, and it used to work fine.

I would prefer keeping Spybot S&D, but I'll disable TeaTimer.

As suggested above - install more memory.
http://www.crucial.com/uk/systemscanner/index.aspx

And run a mem test.
http://www.memtest86.com/download.html
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Download the ISO file from one of the links above to your desktop.
Then burn the ISO to a Cd.
Start the Pc using the Cd and run the memory test overnight or for at least 8 passes.

It is best to run a full scan on individual Ram sticks if you can.
Or run the test but if any errors are shown - then remove all sticks of Ram and test each Ram stick one at a time.

You can also run the Mem test from a USB stick

I ran the uninstall command HijackThis listed for AOLIcon, and it seems to have worked.

I'll try running memtest

And I don't see what uninstalling Google Chrome would do?
