| Laptop on Windows XP running slow Dear TechGuy, My Toshiba Satellite Laptop started running very slow a couple of days ago. Some programs like WORD becoming unresponsive for several minutes, etc. Also, the Windows XP re-starting/turning-on sounds and beeps, and music and video files, are playing broken (fragmented) and jumpy. Restart process is very slow. Copying files to a USB also became slow. | SP 3 has been out for 4 years at least and you are missing out on important Security Updates. Updating Windows may solve most, if not all of your problems. | Thanks blues_harp28, Can the SP3 be installed from the downloaded .exe or is it better to install it from a burned CD? I tried downloading it several times from the MS site but the most it downloaded was 150MB out of the 300MB of the full size file. Tried several times (the English SP3 and also the Spanish SP3) but it doesn't complete the download. Thanks for your help. PoA |

| Besides Windows XP SP2 being outdated by about 4 years, that laptop is loaded with outdated programs and add-ons. It's pretty obvious that it hasn't been properly maintained and kept up-to-date. Even the antivirus program in it is very outdated. You might consider doing a clean reinstall of Windows XP and getting it up-to-date and getting a fresh start. --------------------------------------------------------- |

I do have the Windows installation disc, BUT do you think we can do a clean up without having to install windows? What should I do regarding the Antivirus? Thanks a lot for you help with this, PoA |

| I'll leave you with blues_harp28 to get Windows XP up-to-date and to decide what to install in that computer to protect it. ----------------------------------------------------- Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin both need to be updated to version 11. Adobe Reader 9.4.5 needs to be updated to version 10.1.3. Adobe Shockwave Player 11.5 needs to be updated to version 11.6. K-Lite Codec Pack 4.7.5 Full needs to be updated to version 8.8.0, or uninstalled if no longer needed. Skype 4.2 needs to be updated to version 5.9, or uninstalled if no longer needed. SpyBlaster 4.2 needs to be updated to version 4.6, or uninstalled if no longer needed. There are a number of other programs and extras that you probably no longer need and use, but that'll be your decision which ones to get rid of. ----------------------------------------------------- |

| Service Pack's should only be installed on a Pc that is without any problems and that is free of Malware. We can say neither about your Pc. And so, flavallee's advice about a clean install of Xp, would be the way to go. If you decide [at your own risk] to continue with installing SP3. Clicking on the exe file on your desktop, should start the install process. But first Disconnect from the internet. Disable your Anti-Virus program. Shut down any Firewall that you may have running. Make sure that there are no applications running during the installation. Do not interrupt or interfere with the installation. You may need to Reboot your Pc twice, during installation. Then visit the Windows Update Website. Download and install any updates listed. |

| Thank you blues_harp28, I will do an external hard disk back up of my info and system. And then install the windows xp again from the Toshiba disk. Will it be PS2?
