I unchecked the items you recommended yesterday and everything seems to be working fine thus far. I will paste my new HijackThis log here for your perusal. Just FYI, I am going to be out of state until the middle of next week, and I won't have my laptop with me, but I am not abandoning this thread and am thrilled that I'm finally getting this taken care of! Thanks much!

Go to Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK.

Expand the services window so you can see the list clearly.

Double-click these service entries, one at a time, to open their properties window:

Adobe Version Cue CS4

Adobe Flash Player Update Service

Ati HotKey Poller

FLEXnet Licensing Service

Google Software Updater

InstallDriver Table Manager

Java Quick Starter

SupportSoft Sprocket Service

If "Startup Type" is set on Automatic, change it to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

If "Startup Type" is already set on Manual, close the properties window for that entry.

Examine the rest of the services list.

If "Startup Type" in any of them is set on Disabled, change it to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

After you're all done, close the services window and then restart the computer.

Have a safe trip.

Hi flavallee, I'm back! I followed the instructions above. Most were already set on Manual, but I did have to change Ati HotKey Poller, Java QuickStarter, and SupportSoft Sprocket Service from Automatic to Manual. Likewise, I had a handful of programs in the general list that needed to be changed from Disabled to Manual, although most of them were for things I don't use like networks.

I uploaded photos from my trip onto Facebook a couple days ago, and photo loading is still extremely slow and froze three times, causing me to have to restart. (I do realize we're not done and I don't have RAM in it yet though. I have it here and it should be installed sometime next week.)

I'm glad to be getting rid of all the buildup on my laptop. I use it all the time! Thanks again for your help.

I don't use Facebook or any of the other social networking sites, so I can't comment on any issues with them.

The photos that you're uploading may be too large a file size and taking longer to upload and bogging down your computer.

Hopefully, maxing out the RAM will put some speed and "snappiness" in that computer.

Just FYI, my landlord has not been by yet, and I don't want to push him to come special since he lives in another town, and he's putting the RAM in out of the goodness of his heart. I do have a friend that might be able to do it in the next couple weeks.

Are there other suggestions you think I should try while I'm waiting on RAM? Or do you think the RAM is likely to clear everything up? Thanks.

Let's wait until you get the extra RAM installed, then we'll go from there.

You need to start your own thread and explain your issues in detail.

We cannot help 2 people with 2 different computers in the SAME thread because it's too confusing and too difficult.

Hi flavallee,

I've got the RAM in my computer now, and have been using it for the past couple days. Surprisingly, it has not helped much if at all. I've heard lots of good things from folks who have put extra RAM into their computers, so I was a little perplexed. My computer does not seem to be running any faster. What do you suppose the next step should be? Thanks for your patience and all the help!

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties.

Advise what's listed in the

Computer:

section at the bottom of the "General" tab - exactly as you see it there.

---------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

Save the new log that appears, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

You will not see a big increase in speed in your computer after going from 1 GB to 2 GB of RAM, but what you will see is an improvement in speed and performance in your memory-hungry programs.

Adding more RAM is one of the most cost-effective boost that you can give to a computer.

Thanks for the advice about RAM; it helps to know how to look at it. I do not have a "Computer" section on my General tab, but here is the info it contains within near the bottom:

Dell Inspiron I6400
Intel(R)Core(TM)2 CPU
T5600 @ 1.83GHz
1.83 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

Here is my latest HiJack This log:

This confirms the processor is running at its full rated speed of 1.83 GHz and that all 2.00 GB of RAM is recognized and being used.

There's still a lot running at startup, so that's contributing to the slowness.

What external devices do you connect to and use with that laptop?

Hi flavallee,

Sorry for the MIA, was out of town again for a week. The external devices I connect to are my printer, my mouse, occasional flash drives (but not regularly), and my external hard drive. Thanks!

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.
