| Laptop runs slow, starts up slow, and freezes Hello all, Dell Inspiron E1505 (laptop) Running CrashPlan Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2 OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3, 32 bit Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5600 @ 1.83GHz, x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 2 Processor Count: 2 RAM: 1022 Mb Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400, 256 Mb Hard Drives: C: Total - 109285 MB, Free - 34030 MB; F: Total - 953865 MB, Free - 690190 MB; Motherboard: Dell Inc., 0XD720 Antivirus: Kaspersky Anti-Virus, Updated: Yes, On-Demand Scanner: Enabled You guys have been very helpful in the past so I thought I'd come to you preventatively this time. My Dell laptop is five years old and I won't be able to purchase a new one for another year or two. As far as I know, I don't have any major virus or problems, but gradually my computer has become very slow, and sometimes it freezes. Loading photos on Facebook is a common situation it freezes in, but it happens with other things too. It also starts up very slow, and it can take awhile for windows to open. So far I have tried a number of fixes: System Restore, defragmenting, freeing up space on the hard drive, rearranging items on hard disk, deleting programs I know I don't use, scanning and removing spyware/viruses with Kaspersky/Spybot Search & Destroy/Ewido Anti-Malware/Spyware Blaster, and deleting temp files as suggested by a similar thread in this forum. I deleted Temp files from these locations: C:\WINDOWS\Temp C:\Documents And Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Temp There are probably more programs I don't use, but it's hard to tell what I can safely delete. If there are certain ones that use up a lot of memory, I would appreciate guidance on that. I haven’t fixed any problems via HijackThis yet but will check and fix the lines you suggest. Thanks for your help! | Thanks for your input, Juli007. Kaspersky is my main virus program that runs all the time. The others I mentioned above are free versions downloaded from the internet, and I run them every once in awhile to make sure there's nothing additional wrong. They're not running in the background like Kaspersky is, so as far as I know, this shouldn't slow my system down. |

| There appears to be a lot of outdated and unneeded programs in that computer, so do the following so we can determine what needs to be uninstalled, updated, added, or replaced. Start HiJackThis. Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click on the "Save List" button. Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad. Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here. --------------------------------------------------------- That bloated startup load needs to be trimmed down of unnecessary running programs, so do the following. Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab. Write down only the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them. If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column. Submit those names here in a vertical list. Make sure to spell them exactly as you see them there. --------------------------------------------------------- |

| What's the model name and model number of that Dell laptop? What's the 7-character service tag/express service code on the sticker? This information is needed in order to determine how much RAM it supports and which module(s) it supports. Considering it's running Adobe Photoshop CS4 and other system-hungry apps, it can benefit from having more RAM. ---------------------------------------------------------- If Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 is your preferred antivirus program, that's fine. Multiple antivirus programs should never be installed and running in the same computer because they'll fight each other and bog down the computer and cause other issues. ----------------------------------------------------------- Before we trim down that severely-bloated startup load, let's deal with the currently-installed programs and extras. A number of them need to be uninstalled, updated, or replaced. Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin needs to be updated to 11.3.300.257 Adobe Flash Player 11 ActiveX needs to be updated to 11.3.300.257 Adobe Reader 8.1.3 needs to be uninstalled/removed, then replaced with 10.1.3 Adobe Shockwave Player(unknown version) needs to be uninstalled/removed, then replaced with 11.6.5.635 AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 needs to be uninstalled/removed. AVG Remover(32bit) 2012 needs to be run afterwards so it can find and remove the leftover file and registry "debris" of AVG. Driver Checker 2.7.2 needs to be uninstalled/removed. Ewido Anti-malware needs to be uninstalled/removed. HijackThis 2.0.2 needs to be uninstalled/removed, then replaced with HijackThis 2.0.4 J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 needs to be uninstalled/removed, then replaced with Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.33(6 Update 33) Kuler needs to be uninstalled/removed. SearchAssist needs to be uninstalled/removed. SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition 5.1.0.1002 needs to be installed. Spybot - Search & Destroy(all versions) needs to be uninstalled/removed. During the install/update process of any of these, make sure to uncheck and opt out to install any extras, such as toolbars and homepages, they may offer. ----------------------------------------------------------- |

| Thanks so much, flavallee! I'm backed up at work and will let you know when I have uninstalled/updated that list of programs, but I wanted to provide you with the service tag right now: 6DSH1D1. It is a Dell Inspiron E1505. I will post here after I have completed your instructions, hopefully before the end of this coming weekend. Have a great night. |

| Service tag number 6DSH1D1 is registered to a Dell Inspiron 6400/E1505 laptop. According to the system configuration site for your specific laptop, it was purchased in June 2007 and came with 2 - 512 MB modules of DDR2 PC2-4200(DDR2-533) RAM. It supports up to 2048 MB(2 GB), so that means you can replace the 512 MB modules with 1024 MB(1 GB) modules and double the amount of RAM in it. It supports these 1024 MB(1 GB) modules: 200-pin DDR2 PC2-4200(DDR2-533), CL=5, 1.8V, non-ECC, unbuffered 200-pin DDR2 PC2-5300(DDR2-667), CL=5, 1.8V, non-ECC, unbuffered -------------------------------------------- Advise when you've completed the last section of post #6. -------------------------------------------- |

| Hello, I have completed the steps posted by flavallee, and have removed and/or updated the requested programs. All basically went well, although I will note that when I used AVG Remover to find the leftover file and registry debris, it said this would prompt my system to restart, and it did not, so after it was finished, I restarted my computer manually. The only other hiccup was that when I removed HijackThis 2.0.2, it removed the program but added that the HijackThis.exe file would need to be deleted manually, and this could not be found on my computer, even after doing a comprehensive search, so I downloaded the newer version and continued on. When I ran the SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition, it got rid of a lot of tracking cookies and a trojan called Adware.Zwangi. I haven't cleaned the inside for dust in a while; last time was when I had my keyboard replaced. The outside is free from dust. I will get a hold of a couple products for that this week. Thanks for the info about RAM... I have wanted more info on that for awhile. I have never purchased extra RAM for my computer before... are there places you particularly recommend purchasing from, or that are low cost? Is there a difference between the two options my laptop supports? Also, is it advisable for me to change the RAM myself or find someone who works with computers professionally to do it for me? The steps sound deceptively easy but I know that can be misleading. Are there additional fixes I should try to speed my computer up and keep it from freezing? Thanks again for your extremely clear and prompt help! |

| Go to the C:\Program Files folder. If the folder or file for HiJackThis 2.0.2 is still there, delete it. Be careful not to delete the one for HiJackThis 2.0.4. ------------------------------------------------------ You jumped the gun on me with SUPERAntiSpyware. As long as you updated its definition files before running a quick scan, and as long as you selected and removed everything that it found during the quick scan, that's fine. ------------------------------------------------------ A matching pair of this 1 GB DDR2 PC2-5300 module is what you need for that laptop. Unless you know how to remove/replace RAM modules from inside a laptop, I suggest you have a reliable computer technician do it. ------------------------------------------------------ Start HiJackThis 2.0.4, then click "Do a system scan and save a log file". Save the new log that appears, then copy-and-paste it here. ------------------------------------------------------ |

| Excellent, thanks! HijackThis 2.0.2 was not there. I will order the RAM but it may take a little bit before I can get either my landlord or my friend to install it for me, since they both work as computer technicians. | Let's get to work on getting that severely-bloated startup load trimmed down. I see well over a dozen entries in the startup list that can be unchecked. Several entries in the services list can also have their "startup type" changed from Automatic to Manual. ------------------------------------------------------------ Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab. Write down only the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them. If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column. Submit those names here in a vertical list. Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there. ----------------------------------------------------------- |

| Go back to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab. Uncheck these startup entries: hpgs2wnd PCMService issch ISUSPM dsca sprtcmd quickset cli VERSIO~2 CS4ServiceManager Acrobat_sl Acrotray dumprep 0 –k AdobeARM iTunesHelper qttask realsched jusched GoogleToolbarNotifier msmsgs netWaiting DSAgnt DesktopWeather SUPERAntiSpyware Digital Line Detect After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Restart. When the small System Configuration Utility window appears during restart, ignore the message about the computer being in diagnostic/selective startup mode. Do NOT change it to normal startup mode!!!
