| Space issues Hi all, Lately iI have been having space issues in Windows XP. Basically, my computer has been giving me the "low space warning" issue every time I turn it on recently. I have deleted programs off my computer in an attempt to resolve the issue. Last night, I had cleared 250 MB of free space on my hard drive. This morning, I turn the computer on, and after being on the computer for a few hours (downloading nothing to my knowledge), my computer tells me I am down to 7 MB of free space. What's going on here (do things download on my computer without me knowing)? I have checked all recent program/file downloads, and my computer has no new files. Does just being on the internet mean that files are usually downloading onto my computer (I do watch videos via the web)? And is there something I can do to prevent this (for instance, is there a way for me to automatically remove and files I download off the internet immediately after I am done using them...)? Thanks. By the way, I am told my C drive has 94 MB free below. This is part of why I am confused. | Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties - System Restore. Move the slider from its default value of 12% to 3%, then click Apply - OK. ------------------------------------------------------- Right-click RECYCLE BIN, then click Properties. Move the slider from its default value of 10% to 3%, then click Apply - OK. -------------------------------------------------------- Click Start - Run, then type in %temp% (% is the percent symbol in the number 5 key) and then click OK. Click Start - Run, then type in c:\windows\temp and then click OK. Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them. If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else. If a massive number of files are being deleted, the computer may appear to "hang". Be patient and wait for the deletion process to finish. After it's done, empty the Recycle Bin first, then restart the computer. -------------------------------------------------------- |

Get rid of it and then replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials 4.0.1526.0 - which is more light-weight and more user-friendly and well-recommended here. --------------------------------------------------------- |

| Update, OK, so I'ved one all of these thing (except the AVG one). DIdna't seem to do much. I also cleared some old files/folders. What will happen is that I'll originally start with ~70 MB of space on my hard drive, but after spending some time on the internet, this generally goes down to <5 MB. I dont understand why. When I restart, I seem to gain some but not all of this space back. Is this a poteniail virus issue or is it normal to slowly lose hard drive space when browsing the internet? This is the confusing thing to me, more than the lack of hard drive space itself... |

| We need to get a better picture of your computer, so do the following in the order listed. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4 After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it. Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files. After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load. Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis". Click "Do a system scan and save a log file". When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear. Save that log file. Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here. ------------------------------------------------------------ Start HiJackThis. Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click on the "Save List" button. Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad. Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here. ------------------------------------------------------------ |

| OK, thanks for your help. I've done all of this. The MBAM scan found a couple things, as did the spyware scan. FIrst, I cleared a whole bunch of stuff of the disk. (probably 1-2 GB worth). However, I still only have 100 MB worth of space on this hard drive. Also, this number seems to change every other second (fluctuating from 100 MB to nothing). I'm confused as to why this happens... Second, the MBAM scan took around 6 hours (quick scan). Is this normal? I feel like it likely isn't. I also have a ton of extra crap now (stuff from AVG esepcailly ) on the computer that I can't get off because processes in the background are runnign that use them. When I try to kill these processes, the computer does not allow me to. Any way to auto-kill these processes? Anything else i should do? Thanks! |

| I suggest you follow my advice in post #4 and get rid of AVG and replace it with MSE. You shouldn't be killing running processes without knowing what you're doing. --------------------------------------------------------- |

| OK, So I've done this. Largely, the space issues are fixed, but I'm wondering why my amount of free space seems to fluctuate so much while I'm online (fluctuates both up and down...). Is this normal? |

| I have no idea. Like I previously said, you have a lot of programs and extras that I'm not familiar with, so I don't know if any of them is the cause of the issue. ----------------------------------------------------------- |
