What's the brand name, model name, and model number of that computer?

-------------------------------------------------------

Right-click My Computer, then click Properties.

Advise what's listed in the Computer: section at the bottom of the "General" tab - EXACTLY as you see it there.

-------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

How many entries in the "Startup Item" column have a checkmark?

-------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load.

Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis".

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

The processor is running at its full rated speed and there's 1 GB of RAM.

There are too many startup entries.

Complete the instructions in post #4, then we'll go from there.

All I needed are the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

-------------------------------------------------------

Go back to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Remove the checkmark in these startup entries:

Google Update

ISUSPM

igfxtray

RTHDCPL

Alcmtr

igfxpers

igfxhkcmd

AGRSMMSG

QuickTime Task

iTunesHelper

Adobe ARM

SunJavaUpdateSched

After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Exit Without Restart.

Go to Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK.

Expand the services window so you can see the list clearly.

Double-click these service entries, one at a time, to open their properties window:

Adobe Flash Player Update Service

Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler

Creative Service For CDROM Access

Google Update Service

Google Update Service

InstallDriver Table Manager

Java Quick Starter

LiveUpdate

Roxio UPnP Renderer 9

Roxio Upnp Server 9

LiveShare P2P Server 9

RoxMediaDB9

Roxio Hard Drive Watcher 9

Symantec Core LC

If the "Startup Type" is on Automatic, change it to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

If the "Startup Type" is already set on Manual, close the properties window.

After you're all done, close the services window and then restart the computer.

When the small "System Configuration utility" window appears during startup, ignore its message.

Put a checkmark in the lower left of that window BEFORE you click OK to close it.

After the computer settles down from the restart, start HiJackThis and click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

Save the new log that appears, then copy-and-paste it here.

After you complete post #7, do the following.

---------------------------------------------------------

Download and SAVE

Norton Removal Tool

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (free version)

After they've been downloaded and SAVED, close all open windows.

--------------------------------------------------------

Run the Norton removal tool so it can find and remove everything that's associated with Symantec, Norton, and LiveUpdate.

Restart the computer, if prompted to, so the removal process can finish.

--------------------------------------------------------

Install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Make sure to update its definition files during the install process.

Make sure to uncheck or decline to install any extras, such as toolbars and homepages, that it may offer.

After it's been installed and updated, start it and then run a quick scan with it.

When the quick scan is finished, select and remove EVERYTHING it found.

Restart the computer, if prompted to, so the removal process can finish.

This comment doesn't make any sense.

You should consider doing a "clean" reinstall of Windows XP and getting a fresh start.

When I restart my computer it starts fast, I get to my home page right away, though at that point it slows down and everything takes a long time to open --- outlook , IE any program. I also notice my hard drive fan working hard and I am getting low virtual memory warning, all these things never happened before I changed the startup section

What would it take to do a reinstall, would i not lose all my supporting programs?

The instructions that I gave you in post #7 would improve speed and "snappiness" in your computer and NOT do the opposite.

I use these instructions in several threads here every day without them having a negative impact on speed and performance.

A "clean" reinstall of Windows XP would require you to reinstall all your desired programs and extras afterwards.

If the hard drive died and had to be replaced in that computer, that's what you would need to do.
