| Solved: CPU Usage at 100% All the Time Good Evening Everyone, I'm in a panic. I just accepted a full-time tenure-track teaching job. Honestly, I'm amazed I got it as it's my Dream Job. Which, of course, cued my Dell Latitude D510 Laptop to become frustratingly constipated. Before the Dream Job begins, I'm flat-busted broke; otherwise I'd have simply taken the laptop into the local computer fix-it store and contributed to the economy. Alas, I cannot do that. So, I'm using the desktop to research the laptop's problem and I'm landed here. You guys also strike me as trust-worthy and incredibly bright. A few days ago I noticed my laptop was very sluggish. I accessed the Task Manager and noticed that the CPU Usage is always capped out at 100%. I've tried all the tricks an ignorant, non-tech can try. Below you'll see the TSG SysInfo stuff. Because the semester is lurking right around the corner, I'm growing very panicked about losing the years' worth of work that's on the laptop, or that it will simply become an expensive paperweight. Thank you in advance for your assistance, Holmeslice PS I'd utilize an emoticon, but there doesn't seem to be one that connotes Constipated. | It's more likely that you have something running in startup that is causing the high CPU usage. Try running MSCONFIG & disable any unnecessary programs from loading at startup. You can follow the steps from http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig Regards, Dell-Kris K |

| Do the following in the order that they're listed. -------------------------------------------------------- Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties. Advise what's listed in the Computer: section at the bottom of the "General" tab - exactly as you see it there. ------------------------------------------------------- Click Start - Run, then type in %temp% (% is the percent symbol in the number 5 key) and then click OK. Click Start - Run, then type in c:\windows\temp and then click OK. Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them. If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else. If a massive number of files are being deleted, the computer may appear to "hang". Be patient and wait for the deletion process to finish. After it's done, restart the computer. ------------------------------------------------------- Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4 After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it. Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files. After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load. Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis". Click "Do a system scan and save a log file". When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear. Save that log file. Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here. ------------------------------------------------------- |

| First and foremost, thank you all very much for responding so quickly. My angst is most definitely lightened. Secondly, flavallee, here's what appears on the MY Computer Properties General Tab: Computer: Intel(R) Celeron(R) M processor 1.50GHz 419MHz, 1.24 GB of RAM Physical Address Extension I am now going to proceed to next two steps of deleting the Temp File Folders. I will report after that's completed. |

| Go to Control Panel - Add Or Remove Programs, then uninstall/remove: Babylon Toolbar Driver Update Spybot - Search & Destroy Windows Defender ------------------------------------------------------- AVG 2012 and Norton Antivirus are BOTH installed and running. Multiple antivirus programs will fight each other and bog down a computer and cause other issues. One of them needs to be uninstalled/removed. Personally, I would uninstall/remove BOTH of them and then install Microsoft Security Essentials 4.0.1526.0 It's free and light-weight and very user-friendly and well-recommended here. ------------------------------------------------------- |

I will try again after dinner. Thanks again! I'll be making a donation to this site in short order! |

Allow all logs and files to be removed. Restart the computer, if prompted to, so the uninstall/removal process can finish. Regardless of whether you were able to uninstall/remove them or not, run each removal tool afterwards. They're designed to find and remove all the file and registry "debris" of AVG and Norton. Restart the computer, if prompted to, so the removal process can finish. Quote:

| Okay, so I've rid the laptop of AVG, Norton, Babylon Toolbar, Windows Defender, and Driver Update. I downloaded MSE. The only issues are uninstalling Spybot Search and Destroy and the CPU Usage is still continually capped at 100%. Hopefully, once the Spybot is removed, things will improve. Again, I appreciate to no end your help. |

| You need to be patient about CPU usage because there's still plenty of work to do. Has speed improved since the processor is now running at its rated speed? ------------------------------------------------------------ AFTER you uninstall/remove Spybot - Search & Destroy and install Microsoft Security Essentials and restart the computer, do the following: ------------------------------------------------------------ Start HiJackThis, then click "Do a system scan and save a log file". Save the new log that appears, then copy-and-paste the entire log here. ------------------------------------------------------------ Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab. Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them. If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column. Submit those names here in a vertical list. Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there. ------------------------------------------------------------ |

| Okay, so I'm having trouble deleting/uninstalling SpyBot Search and Delete. HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVer.... I'm sure you probably grow weary of all the gratitude, but I want you to know mine's sincere. I've noticed than when I restart the machine after, say, running a HijackThis scan that it takes about ten to twelve minutes for it not to cap at 100% CPU Usage and for it to become operational. As an aside, what is your preferred browser? For a long while, I found Google Chrome able to accommodate my needs. But since this most recent incident, I feel like a tired parent who has an 18-year-old still living at home, awaiting the start of college: "Go already! We've had our time together; now go burden someone else." An odd analogy, I'll admit. Obviously I've never fathered any chirren, and I ain't gonna either. If I can't manage to keep a laptop free from viruses, I'm to be expected to raise an infant? No, I rather my disposable income (when that arrives on my first payday on August 25th). |
