I had a problem of no sound some time ago which was resolved. Since 12 hrs ago I have logged in and now there is no sound again. I went directly to Control Panel and opened Sounds and Audio Devices tab and at the top of volume it stated I had no audio device. Use only default devices was ticked.
In the last posting (months ago now) there was a very helpful link to the acer site which allowed me to download the device needed. I went back to this post to see if I could find that link again. Tried but there is no record of the model I own. Is it possible that my model acer has been turfed?
What do I do now?....confused

uninstall your audio driver and reboot

If re-booting doesn`t help and you have no luck on the Acer website, you could try installing DriverMax (it`s free) and after running the initial scan, get the software to search for new/updated/missing drivers.

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties - Hardware - Device Manager.

Are there any entries in the list that have a yellow ? or ! next to them?

According to your previous thread, your computer is an Acer Aspire E500 series desktop.

If you go here and then navigate to Desktop - Aspire - Aspire E500 and then select the Driver tab and then select Microsoft Windows XP Professional x32, it'll bring up the list of drivers for your desktop.

Your desktop appears to have Realtek AC'97 Audio or Realtek High Definition Audio.

re right click on MY COMPUTER then
properties - hardware - device manager -
I looked and there was yellow question mark
and next to it was a section labelled
Other Devices then 2 expandable sections
called unknown device.

When I go to listen and watch a TV programme
on line - I found out since posting initial
query - chrome and firefox is for some reason
resulting in no sound. Yet when l listen to
same site on line with IE I get sound.
I removed Realtek High Definition Audio Driver
and re booted, then re installed it from the link you posted.

Sound works good with IE.

For the time being, I have removed Chrome and Firefox until I know
the reason for it not producing sound.

Thank you JennyJackson01 for your suggestion I found the driver in the Acer site - just hadn't located the drivers sub section when I last looked

What are the names in the Device Manager that have a yellow ? next to them?

Double-click each of those entries to open its properties window.

Click the Details tab.

Select Hardware Ids.

There should be one or more strings that have VEN_####&DEV_#### as part of it.

Advise what the numbers and letters are that follow VEN_ and DEV_

Be real careful NOT to make any typos.

I double clicked on those entries in device manager, selected Details then Hardware Ids but it was blank in both of them.

There was nothing that looked like VEN_ or DEV_ no numbers and no letters

I have a screen shot but no idea how to insert it so you can see what I see. When I click on insert image in here it asks me for http address but it's on my desktop and I am clueless on how to insert it...

If either one is, double-click it to open its properties window, then click the Driver tab.

Go here and click one of the "Download @ MajorGeeks" links to download and SAVE the WDM_R270.exe file.

After it's been downloaded and SAVED, close all open windows first, then double-click it to start the install process.

Follow the directions carefully that appear and restart the computer when prompted to.

If all goes well, the current version 5.10.0.5010 will be updated to version 5.10.0.6662.

If you click one of the "Download @ MajorGeeks" links like I advised you to do, the WDM_R270.exe file will download.

You're having difficulty following simple instructions, so some "hands on" help is probably needed on your end.
