Solved: SM Bus controller not installed
According to the Device Manager, under "Other devices", SM Bus Controller is showing a yellow question mark and that it is not installed.

According to the "details", in the properties of this device, it is:
PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4372&SUBSYS_2A31103C&REV_81\3&267A616A&0&A0

Allowing Windows Update to locate the driver does nothing, and I do not have the disks that came with the PC.

My PC is an HP Compaq Presario, here are the details from Speccy:

Operating System
MS Windows XP Home 32-bit SP2
CPU
Intel Pentium D 930
Presler 65nm Technology
RAM
1.00 GB Single-Channel DDR2 @ 266MHz (4-4-4-12)
Motherboard
Hewleet-Packard Asterope (CPU 1) 44 °C
Graphics
Hanns.G HQ191 (1280x1024@60Hz)
64MB GeForce 7300 LE (ASUStek Computer Inc) 69 °C
Hard Drives
195GB Maxtor Maxtor 6L200M0 (SATA) 44 °C
Optical Drives
TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552L
IDE-DVD DROM6216
Audio
Realtek High Definition Audio

I have done a Google search for PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4372&SUBSYS_2A31103C&REV_81\3&267A616A&0&A0 and found websites that say that I can install it but first need to install their DriverGuide installer which I am loathe to do as it may cause me even more problems. So I was ideally hoping that there was a place I could simply download this driver without having to install any third party software. Any clues? Or am I going about this the wrong way?

Thank you in advance

if you have the exact model - you should find the drivers on the HP support website
it may be part of the chipset drivers

according to the PCI database
http://www.pcidatabase.com/vendor_details.php?id=240

The HP driver is here
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp31001-31500/sp31190.exe

Quote:
MS Windows XP Home 32-bit SP2
you may also want toupdate to SP3 to ensure security on your PC

Thanks!!! This worked! Or at least, "Other devices" has disappeared from Device Manager (and with it, the yellow question mark).

Thanks for the SP3 suggestion. I had some problems with it and went back to SP2.

Best regards

It was a while ago so I can't remember the exact problem, but basically I was unable to get the audio drivers to work with SP3 and I tried lots of different advice at the time. It's something I'll revisit at a later date, but for this particular issue the problem has been solved thanks to your excellent advice and I'll mark the thread accordingly. Thanks again!
