Solved: Slow Startup and clock is always 2 hours behind

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad with a Windows XP operating system. When I turn it on it takes five minutes to start. The clock is always two hours behind, even if I change it.

Then when I open excel or word they are very slow and using any graphics features are extremely slow. Sometimes the typing stops in the middle for 15 seconds.

The internet is very slow and many times it freezes and does not respond and shuts down.

Is there anything I can do to get it back to its original speed?

You might have to check the CMOS battery.Thats why the time keeps changing.Its somewhere near the motherboard i think and looks like a watch battery.Ive never had to change one or had one go bad but that would be my first guess to start with.Being that its a laptop you will have to check the different compartments till you find it.If you arent comfortable enough to do it yourself have someone knowledgeable do it for you and see if thats the problem.If it isnt the battery it could be a motherboard or power supply problem.

You didn't advise what model number that Lenovo(IBM) ThinkPad laptop is.

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

I actually had my timezone in Pacific. I changed that and the seems to be functioning now.

Hopefully that has always been the problem and it won't happen again in the future.\

That's a large startup list.

You probably have "Normal Startup" mode selected in

Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab

and have the entire startup list checked.

Some of them don't need to auto-start at all, and some of them can be manually started when needed.

Uncheck these startup entries:

TpKmapAp

CLIStart

GoogleDesktop

ISUSPM

issch

pdservice

cssauth

qttask

HPWuSchd2

jusched

msmsgs

GoogleToolbarNotifier

GoogleUpdate

WMPNSCFG

Adobe Reader Speed Launch

After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Restart.

When the System Configuration Utility window appears during restart, ignore its message about the computer being in "Diagnostic" Startup or "Selective Startup" mode.

Do not change it to "Normal Startup" mode!!!

Put a check in the lower left of that window, then click OK to close it.

I have performed the below actions. I received the access denied dialog boxes that said I may need to be in admin mode. When the restart took place, I went to msconfig and everything appeared to be applied.

The pc took 3 mins to load up. Quite a bit faster. The internet took about 2 mins. Still quite slow, and a deal website also poped up.

I also wanted to note that I inherited the computer from my father-in-law. He has a bunch of security features which are not necessary. Including a security chip and password. However, I could never figure out how to get rid of these items, as there is nothing of importance on the computer. Would you know how to get rid of some of these features?

I also received a high memory alert related to my internet use, is that an issue?

Sorry for all the issues, but really appreciate your help.

The 1.83 GHz processor is running at only 987 MHz - about 54% of its rated speed.

Go to Control Panel - Power Options.

Change the power scheme to "Always On".

Click Apply - OK, then restart the computer.

Go back into the system properties window.

What's listed now in the Computer: section?

It's always best to format the hard drive and do a clean reinstall of Windows and get a fresh start with an inherited computer because it's impossible to find and remove all the "debris" and problems from its previous owner.

I'm fairly sure that's not what you want to do, so do the following in the order listed.

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load.

Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis".

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE file here.

Adobe Reader 7.0 is very outdated and needs to be uninstalled.
Adobe Reader 10.1.3 then needs to be installed to replace it.

Bing Bar needs to be uninstalled, unless you actually need and use it.

Google Update Helper
Google Updater needs to be uninstalled.

HP Update needs to be uninstalled.

InterActual Player
InterVideo WinDVD needs to be uninstalled.

Java(TM) 6 Update 29 needs to be updated to Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.33(6 Update 33).
The new version will overwrite and replace the old version, so there's no need to uninstall the old version first.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.62.0.1300 needs to be installed.

OpenOffice.org Installer 1.0
PCHealthBoost 2.1.2 needs to be uninstalled.

Skype 3.2 is very outdated and needs to be uninstalled.

SUPERAntiSpyware 5.5.0.1012 needs to be installed.

TranslatorBar_1.2 Toolbar needs to be uninstalled.

Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant needs to be uninstalled.

During the install/update process of the above 4 programs, make sure to uncheck and decline to install any extras, such as toolbars and homepages, they may offer.

Make sure to uncheck and decline to use the "Pro" or "Trial" versions of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware.
