Hi throoper. Yes, I can go right down the path to the thumbs.db file itself, and I tried deleting from the thumbs file back to the main folder in My Documents - all with the same results. The folders are empty now except for the stubborn thumbs, as I've moved all the jpegs.

I assume you've done this, but in case you haven't.
Use the command prompt to delete the upper level directory (Obviously not My Documents, but the folder that contains the other folders. After emptying them of their contents, of course).

If that doesn't do it (or hasn't if you already tried it), call up Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete on your keyboard).
Keep both Command and Task Manager open and on screen while doing the following.

In Task Manager>Processes, find and end the Explorer.exe process.
You should only have your desktop background after it ends (No folders, taskbar, or anything else on the monitor except TM and Command).
Using the Command Prompt, try deleting the folder with the rmdir command.
To start up Explorer again, on Task Manager switch to the Applications tab, click New task and type explorer.exe and OK.

The idea here is that it's the folder shell causing the problem and trying with explorer out of the equation will allow it to be deleted.
