| You should've sent me a private message to look at your thread. I just happen to be browsing through the "Windows XP" threads and saw your request for my assistance. ------------------------------------------------------- Here is the support site for the HP Pavilion Media Center a1330n desktop. I suggest you add and save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can readily refer to it when needed. According to its product specifications section, it's almost 7 years old and came with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. Windows XP Media Center Edition is actually Windows XP Professional with additional multimedia enhancements and features - which is why your TSG SysInfo log shows it as Windows XP Professional. Your log is showing 958 MB of RAM, so that desktop apparently still has the original 1024 MB(512 MB X 2) of RAM that came in it. It has 4 slots and supports up to 4096 MB of RAM, so you should seriously consider adding 2 more 512 MB modules to the 2 empty slots. It supports and uses 184-pin DDR PC3200(DDR400) CL=3, 2.6 volt, unbuffered, non-ECC modules. Adding more RAM is one of the best and most cost-effective speed and performance boost that you can give it. ----------------------------------------------------- Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4 After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click it to install it. Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files. After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load. Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis". Click "Do a system scan and save a log file". When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear. Save that log file. Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log file here. ----------------------------------------------------- Start HiJackThis. Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click on the "Save List" button. Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad. Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE file here. ----------------------------------------------------- |

| The funny thing is I almost sent you a message! I just figured I would wait till this afternoon and if I didn't hear from I would then send a message. Glad you found the message though. I book marked the support site you suggested. Yes, my computer is old, for technology. My husband mentioned we get more RAM for my computer, so we will look into that further. Thanks for suggesting that. Okay, getting back to business. | The scan log and uninstall_list.txt log shows Microsoft Security Essentials and Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 both installed. Multiple antivirus programs in the same computer will fight each other and bog it down and cause other issues. One of them needs to go. Personally, I would keep MSE and get rid of KIS, but it's your choice. --------------------------------------------------- Click the green icon with white "down" arrow icon at each site to download and save Java Runtime Environment 1.7.0.07(7 Update 7) Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.65.0.1400 SUPERAntiSpyware 5.5.0.1016 Just download and save them for now. Note: You appear to have the last one already installed, but I don't know if it's the current version or an older version. --------------------------------------------------- Go to Control Panel - Add Or Remove Programs, then uninstall/remove Adobe AIR - unless you actually need and use it Apple Software Update Bing Bar - unless you actually need and use it CCleaner - unless you really know how to use it safely Google Update Helper Google Updater Java(TM) 6 Update 33 Mozilla Maintenance Service After you're done, restart the computer. ---------------------------------------------------- Install the 3 programs that you previously downloaded and saved. | I was out doing errands today but was able to get started back with computer shenanigans an hour ago. Okay I went back to just having MSE - I disabled KIS, would it be best that I just uninstall? How do I get MSE to work at startup again? I was able to uninstall/remove all you listed but Apple Software Update. When I tried to uninstall it, a window popped up saying: There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A problem require for this install to be complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. I installed the new downloads and definitions for Java and Malwarebytes... I had the current version & definitions of SUPER. Per your request, no scans have been run yet for these. What's next? |

| If you've decided to keep Microsoft Security Essentials, don't just disable Kaspersky Internet Security. You need to uninstall it so there isn't 2 antivirus programs in your computer. Microsoft Security Essentials has 2 entries that need to be running: 1. Microsoft Security Client or msseces needs to be checked in the startup list. Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab 2. Microsoft Antimalware Service needs to be on Automatic in the services list. Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK Double-click it, then change "startup type" to Automatic, then click Apply - OK. ------------------------------------------------------ Don't worry about uninstalling Apple Software Update. ------------------------------------------------------ Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Click "Scanner(tab) - Perform quick scan - Scan". If infections or problems are found during the scan, the number of them will be highlighted in red. When the scan is finished, click "Show Results". Make sure that EVERYTHING is selected, then click "Remove Selected". If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click "Yes". Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again. Click "Logs"(tab). Highlight the scan log entry, then click "Open". When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here. ------------------------------------------------------ Start SUPERAntiSpyware. Select the "Quick Scan" option, then click "Scan your Computer". If infections or problems are found during the scan, a list will appear and the number of them will be highlighted in red. When the scan is finished and the scan summary window appears, click "Continue". Make sure that EVERYTHING in the list is selected, then click "Remove Threats". Click "OK - Finish". If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, do so. Start SUPERAntiSpyware again. Click "View Scan Logs". Highlight the scan log entry, then click "View Selected Log". When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here. ------------------------------------------------------ |

| The scan results look good. MBAM tends to find more serious issues, and it came out clean. It's normal for SAS to find some adware tracking cookies. Do the following in the order that they're listed. ------------------------------------------------------ Click Start - Run, then type in %temp% (% is the percent symbol in the number 5 key) and then click OK. Click Start - Run, then type in c:\windows\temp and then click OK. Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them. If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else. If a massive number of files are being deleted, the computer may appear to "hang". Be patient and wait for the deletion process to finish. After it's done, restart the computer. ------------------------------------------------------ Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab. Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them. If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column. Submit those names here in a vertical list. Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there. ------------------------------------------------------ Start HiJackThis, then click "Do a system scan and save a log file". Save the log that appears, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log here. ------------------------------------------------------ |

| I think part of the prob w/ the computer was the added antivirus (Kaspersky) but since removing it, things are much better. | I'm glad to hear that things are much better. Let's try to improve on that a bit more. --------------------------------------------- Go to Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK. Expand the services window so you can see the list clearly. Double-click these service entries, one at a time, to open their properties window: Ati HotKey Poller Canon Camera Access Library 8 HP Port Resolver HP Status Server InstallDriver Table Manager Java Quick Starter LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling Service Skype Updater If "Startup Type" is on Automatic, change it to Manual, then click Apply - OK. After you're done with the above entries, look at the rest of the services list. If "Startup Type" in any of them is set on Disabled, change it to Manual, then click Apply - OK. After you're all done, restart the computer. Run it for awhile and make sure that everything is working okay. --------------------------------------------------- How long has it been since Disk Defragmenter was run? If it's been over a month or two, run it. There's no need to run it any often than that. --------------------------------------------------- |

| Things seem to be running well. Disk Defragmenter was completed last month. |

| One more thing you can do to speed up your computer. From your HijackThis log, I can see the SearchIndexer.exe process. It's related to Windows Search. It's not really useful and does slow down a computer, especially with XP. I don't see Windows Search in your uninstall list, so you'll need to look into your services: Click Start > Run > type services.msc Press Enter. Locate the Windows Search service. Double-click it, Stop and Disable it. If you still don't see the Windows Search service, locate the Indexing service. Stop and Disable it.
