PHANTOM Thanks for the alternate. I did as you said but when I click on the icon the first message I get is "Sino couldn't connect and will now continue with the current version", when I check the Ipconfig box and uncheck BBCcode (all this on the damaged computer) I get a message saying: You haven't made a selection. Please select one or more tick boxes to proceed". I get this nomatter what combination of ticks/checks that I use. I ran the same programme from the same source flashdrive on this working laptop and it did the scan no problem, so it is not the programme or the download version. ????

There is also a square box that appears in the left hand corner at the same time as the error message it is empty but it is headed with "tk"

OK, let's see how your services are set up.

1- Run HijackThis again.

2- Click on Open the Misc Tools section from the Main Menu.

3- Check the List also minor sections (full) and List empty sections (complete) boxes.

4- Click on Generate StartupList log.

5- Copy and paste the StartupList log from Notepad into your next reply.

A few services aren't set exactly as they should:

Cryptographic Services needs to be set to Automatic.

Logical Disk Manager needs to be set to Automatic.

Error Reporting Service needs to be set to Auto.

Health Key and Certificate Management Service needs to be set to Manual.

HTTP SSL needs to be set to Manual.

IPSEC Services needs to be set to Auto.

Seems you have installed IPv6 on your Windows XP. Any particular reason? It's not supposed to be installed by default. The service is set to Manual on your system. If you don't need it, Disable it, or I can show you how to uninstall IPv6 (procedure included in the following link).

Ever had Symantec/Norton products installed on that computer (antivirus)?

I have changed those settings in Control Panel. I removed IPv6. I will have to go offline now. Thanks for all your help today. I will check in again in the morning.

It might be a good idea to run the Norton Removal Tool if you never did in the past. Norton is notorious for connection issues when not properly uninstalled.

By the way, how are you connecting to the Internet? Are you connecting through a router?

How is your TCP/IP configuration?

Click Start > Run > type ncpa.cpl

Press Enter.

Right-click your network connection.

Click Properties.

On the General tab, scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click it.

Click Properties.

Is Obtain an IP address automatically selected?

Is Obtain DNS server address automatically selected?

Good morning, Thanks for your advice. I have run the Norton uninstall on both computers.
Yes, I do have a router.

When I type in ncpa.cpl on the damaged computer I do not get the screen you show. I get one that is headed "Network Connections" and then all it shows is "AOL , disconnected, PCI Data Fax SoftModem with smart CP." (??) It keeps trying to connect to aol but can't.

When I do the same prompt on the laptop I am using now I get the screen you show and all the wireless info. Something is very wrong. I have broadband/wirelesss. This working laptop is connecting fine with wireless internet.

Oh by the way when all this started the Internet Options wouldn't open on my Control Panel (I believe this is an IE8 problem?) and now the icon has disappeared there too.???

It's normal not to get to the page in the screenshot from the ncpa.cpl command. You need to right-click on your network connection and select Properties. Then you can get to my first screenshot and proceed from there.
