Question System32....NLS Files
Hello, I have about 55 nls.files in Windows Sys.32.
Are these required or can I delete them?

XP Home IE6 SP1

NLS Files = Multiple Language Resource Files. Character Translation; National Language Services driver (font or font map).



A WORD OF CAUTION about NLS files. Delete any one of these you're not supposed to and your system may not restart.


My system settings are for U.S.English. If you live outside of the U.S. using a foreign from U.S. computer you will need to check within your Layout.ini file within your Prefetch folder to see exactly which NLS files your system uses.

For my U.S.English settings, I remove all of these NLS files:

I'm really into removing unnecessary files from XP, and this was part of a post I made on another site about Slimming Down XP.


Here's something very interesting about NLS Files from X-Setup...

"When you right-click the mouse in Internet Explorer, the program checks it codepage settings in the Registry. It if finds a blank codepade, then it will try to locate a replacement. Doing this wastes a lot of time and processor cycles, so by removing the empty entries, the process can be speeded up."

If you use X-Setup, this will cleanup the blank entries in your registry; however it only removes the blank entries there, it does not remove the unnecessary NLS files from system32 for you.

In X-teq, go to: All X-Setup Plugins > Internet > Internet Explorer > System > Clean Up Code Page References.

It found 79 error invalid codes for me. These are the references for NLS Files = Multiple Language Resource Files. Character Translation; National Language Services driver (font or font map), we discussed in our Slimming Down XP threads.


However, you can do this manually here...

What version of X-Setup? I don't see that option in 6.

I highly recommend leaving those files alone. I deleted mine and was unable to boot.

Interestingly, I created blank files with the correct names to replace (from the Recovery Console) the ones I had deleted, and the machine booted normally. I then recopied the real files from the XP CD.

Elvandil, I think that was from an older version of X-Setup. I don't have a version installed right now. I usually just record and save the changes it makes as reg files, and discard the program.

Let me install the lasted version and see if I can find its location on that version. BRB.

I misspoke before. The version I have is the new one, 6.5 Pro. I don't really like it as much as 6.3 and many options seem to be missing from 6.5 for whatever reason (mostly tweaks, like the I/O buffer, that didn't seem to do anything, anyway).

I don't see the option on 6.5 (The latest version as far as I know.)

I'll check some CDs I may have the old version backed up on.

I'll be right back, but in the meantime, this is the reg file X-Setup generated for cleaning up my codename references.

and below it, I had the program generate an UNDO reg file.

You can see by the UNDO reg file what it removed for me.

IMPORTANT...(If you want to try these reg files)

The thing about removing "your own" uneeded "NLS files" from system32, you need to check within your Layout.ini file within the Prefetch folder to see which NLS files "your" computer is using.

But most people won't take the time to do that, and they expect "my" deletions to work for them.

Thanks for that. No need to go looking unless you really want to.

I have installed nearly all languages in my XP Pro, anyway, so I wouldn't want to remove any of the code files for those. Not that I can really read all those languages, but if I don't at least see them, I never will! Besides, I hate whole pages of ???? :-)

Holy Smoke Bold_Fortune, I didn't want you to go to all that trouble. I don't know whether or not I would touch them now.
My computer is going well (touch wood) now and I would hate to
knock it off. I will have a look round later, this is the first visit of the day and it is only for a scoot around.

My prefetch folder stopped working for some reason, I don't know if emptying it too often would do it or not, not really missed
anyway.

boyoh53, check out this little exe application for messing with your Prefetch. It's really cool. I use it all the time.

Oh, usually if your Prefetch stops working it's usually because Task Scheduler has been disabled. But just a guess.

Yes I read that before about Task Scheduler. I did actually disable something. Trouble was I could always see T.S. on scans
but never able to see what it was running, somehow I disabled
it, as I say it never named what it was running.
I tried to start it up again, unsuccessfully I might add.

Bold_Fortune, Task Scheduler rollin' along again. It, for some reason was disabled at "Services".
Probably me, always fiddlin' at something.
