Solved: Userinit.exe startup error -- no disk
When I boot my computer (XP sp1) I receive the following message.
userinit.exe - No Disk
there is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive A:
If I hit continue the message reappears - after hitting continue 3 or 4 time message disappears and computer functions normally.
If I insert a blank disk into drive A: and press continue the message disappears. This started after an upgrade of McAffee and an update of virus DATs. Also Ad-aware is installed. This is now the second computer with these symptoms

ANY IDEAS??

Thanks
Steve

I checked the registry entry for
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.
the key value is C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe. As far as I can tell this is correct and I don't have a wsaupdater.exe issue here

Welcome to TSG!!

Create a permanent folder on your hard drive for Hijackthis, like My Documents\HJT
Click on this link: http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/and download hijackthis. Save the file into the folder you have created.
Unzip the file to the folder.
Scan your machine, then click on Save Log.

Post a copy back here and someone will be happy to review it.

Don't make any changes until instructed to do so.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

This is not going to fix the userinit problem. I'll ask someone else to have a look.

The source of the problem is not evident in the Scanlog.

Some questions: when did this problem begin? Have you installed or uninstalled anything just prior? CD-burning software perhaps?

Also, run regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

In the right hand pane do you see exactly this value for userinit:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

And does "userinit.exe" exist in the system32 folder?

System Restore may be a resolution to this problem...

Also, let's see a "startup list" from HijackThis. To display this select:

Config > Misc Tools, put a check in "list also minor sections", and then select "generate startuplist".

Copy/paste that here.

Does this article sound like it might be relevant -- any removable disk drives installed?

I've already checked the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and the value is C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe. i'll see if userinit.exe exists in system32 folder. No new software but did recently upgrade McAfee enterprise to 8.0i. No removable drives on this machine. I'll paste the HJT startup log tomorrow.

Thanks for the help!

Just out of curiosity try putting a disk, any disk, in the CD or DVD drive and see if the error occurs. It may even be the floppy drive that is being referred to.

Is there a comma after that line in the registry as in my example?

Also check the Administrative Tools > Event Viewer, System and Application logs for associated errors. Look for a "winlogon" entry in Application events even if it has no error associated with it.

Do you have a System Restore point that predates the problem?

There is a comma at the end of the registry value. USERINIT does appear as an app inm Sytem32 folder (no .exe extension).

Starting with a cd in drive makes no difference

I do have some restore points (on one computer but not the other), but was trying to avoid a re-install , also this has piqued my curiousity.

Thanks Again
