XP removed my Modem
I installed Windows XP about a week and a half ago, and I haven't been able to connect to the internet since then. When I look at my network connections it says "Modem Removed". It's also trying to connect to a Port that is no longer on my computer. I've talked to 3 different Windows Tech Support people, and at the end their only solution for me was to buy a new modem, and re-purchase all of my Microsoft Office programs that were wiped out as well. Well I was able to reload the Office programs because I had them on a disk, thank goodness. But I don't know what to do about this modem.

Where do you buy a modem from? And how do I know which one is compatible with the kind of computer I have (Compaq Armada M700, Laptop), AND Windows XP? And is there anyway for me to go back to Windows ME or would I have to purchase that as well? If anyone can offer assistance I would really appreciate it.

Thank you in advance.

Which one of those links on that page do I use to install drivers??

I forgot to mention the specifics of what I went through with the Windows Techs already...When I go to the Properties of my Network COnnection it says
"Connect Using:
Modem Removed-Unavailable device (COM1)"
The Modem that is present on my computer is called a Lucent Win Modem, and the Communications Port thats on there is COM1.
I was told by one of the Techs to download the latest version of my modem from the Compaq website. Well I did that, then contacted Windows again so they could help me through the installation process. That corrected absolutely nothing.
Then we tried getting the computer to recognize which Port was installed. Because before it was trying to connect to COM4, which was no longer on my computer. Well it isn't trying to connect to COM4 anymore, but it's still not recognizing the Port that is available.

Hopefully that information will be of help for any further suggestions. And again Thank you in advance.

That's the same file I was told to download and install by the Windows Tech. Which I did and went through the installation process with them as well. Unfortunately that didn't work.

Comms 1 and 2 are usually reserved for serial/parallel devices - have you tried Com 3? Since the MODEM is "present" on your computer, it will appear in Device Manager. Go there and uninstall it then allow XP to redetect it after rebooting.

I had two network connections before. One was trying to connect to COM3 and the other was trying to connect to COM4. Both of them gave me the same message "Modem removed...", so I deleted those with the Tech and tried making several new connections. It's now trying to connect to COM1 but it's still giving me the same message. I've been through the whole uninstall and reinstall with the Tech guys as well. As i said before the only Communications Port that was even present in my Device manager was COM1.

But now that I think about it I believe we only tried uninstalling the Modem, not the communications Port. When I suggested it to the Tech he kind of cut me off and moved on to something else. So I'll go try that again and get back to you all with the results.

I did try uninstalling & letting XP automatically reinstall the communications Port. It still installed COM1 though, and I still have no internet connection.

This problem description and resolution is inconclusive. Researching a similar problem suggests a resolution which might have worked for MizzCei, without resorting to the reformat and reinstall procedure which is often suggested for this problem.

It is possible that the inability to reinstall or correct the installation of the modem is due to the absence of the telephony providers which should be present in the OS and to errors in the registry keys which prevent reinstallation of these features when attempting to make a new connection. The providers I refer to include (at least in part)
Microsoft H.232 Telephony Service Provider
Microsoft HID Phone TSP
Microsoft Multicast Conference TAPI Service Provider
Microsoft(R) Windows (TM) Remote Service Provider
TAPI Kernel-Mode Serice Provider
Unimodem 5 Service Provider

One problem solver discovered that copying the values under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony\Prov iders from a clean machine to the problem machine permitted these providers to install.

Export of this key from a working XP SP2 Dell laptop produced a 2Kbyte .reg file.

Of course merging this key into another machine's registry might cause that machine to malfunction or even to stop working, so that would be a last resort before reformatting the HD and reinstalling Windows XP, I think.

The contents of the file looked like this in text mode:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony\Prov iders]
"ProviderID0"=dword:00000001
"ProviderID1"=dword:00000002
"ProviderID2"=dword:00000003
"ProviderID3"=dword:00000004
"ProviderID4"=dword:00000005
"ProviderID5"=dword:00000006
"NextProviderID"=dword:00000007
"ProviderFileName0"="unimdm.tsp"
"ProviderFileName1"="kmddsp.tsp"
"ProviderFileName2"="ndptsp.tsp"
"ProviderFileName3"="ipconf.tsp"
"ProviderFileName4"="h323.tsp"
"ProviderFileName5"="hidphone.tsp"
"NumProviders"=dword:00000006

For users who are capable of safely navigating and editing the registry it might be reasonable to verify that the settings at this location are compatible with the needs of their machine, and determine ways of correcting them if they are not.
