Question XP always scans on boot.
XP w/SP2, just recently ALWAYS scans on boot, and first boot of the day freezes at the desktop. After reboot and another scan, it's ok. Until next boot/re-boot, then it wants to scan again.

It's a new drive, I've run chkdisk and Norton disk doctor, many times, nothing is ever found, everything checks out fine.

What kind of "scan"? What does the screen say and what does it scan for?

it says there may be a problem with a disk
It says there may be a problem with a disk. It appears to be chkdisk that runs., and checks all hard drives physical and logical. No errors are found.

Arrow Error Log
Take a look in the Error log to see if any bad blocks have been reported. If so then run CheckDisk by right-clicking the drive icon(s) open the Properties and choose Tools, Check Now... , check both boxes and click OK.

You will have to re-boot if this is on your active (operating system, or system) drive.

Error log. Start Menu, Help and Support, Pick a Task, "Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems."

Then "Advanced system information" & "View the Error Log".

To clear the Error log, open open Administrative Tools, Event viewer, then click on Application, Security & System to display the list, then click on Action and "Clear all Events."

ummn, have u let it finish?
have you tried to at least one time let the scan completely finish then restart the computer? I have had the same problem also, i usually just cancel out but then it just keeps scanning every time i restart the computer, one time i let it finish and upon restarting it did not scan again
also, theres a parameter in chkdsk command that will put your computer into scan i think its chkdsk /r or something. i am not really sure, but yeah, try to let it finsih one time.

It might just be that it is stuck.

To stop the execution of CHKDSK /F /R, you must edit the registry using Registry Editor.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk.

To stop the execution of CHKDSK /F /R, take the following steps:

1. Run the Registry Editor(Regedt32.exe).

2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

3. Change the BootExecute entry from:

autocheck autochk * /r\DosDevice\C:

To:

autocheck autochk *

Rather than editing the registry each time you boot to stop the next scan, it might also be good to figure out why it is doing this.

As previously suggested by orochimaru, have you let it finish a scan.
Since this is a new problem, what changes were made around the time it started happening.
Do you have FAT32 or NTFS

For those who don't know where the error log is located.
[1] Start Menu
[2] Help and Support
[3] Pick a Task
[4] Tools
[5] Advanced System Information
[6] View the Error Log

Try a disk check from the Recovery Console. I don't know why, but mine oicks up errors there that the normal chkdsk doesn't see. You can also run a check from this floppy or CD:
http://users.adelphia.net/~abraxas/dl/NTFSchk.exe (bootable floppy)
http://users.adelphia.net/~abraxas/dl/NTFSchkISO.iso (bootable CD image)
Though unlikely, running chkdsk externally will make sure that chkdsk (or autochk.exe, which is what runs at boot) is not itself damaged.

From a command prompt, you could also try setting defaults for chkdsk:

chkntfs /d <Enter>

If none of this helps, please post the contents of the registry key mentioned above.

Since FAT32 is not the native file system for XP, was this a clean install or and upgrade from a previous one.

Can you give the drive sizes and partition sizes please?

How were the drives prepared, using fdisk or using the XP CD?

Were they FULL formatted?

The problem is pretty new, this thing has been running well for many months.

Here's the disks.

c:drv1 vol1 18.6g

d:local 14.8g

e:drv1 vol2 46.5g

f:drv1 vol3 46.5g

g:local 19.6g

h:local 19.6g

i:local 20.2g

I do not recall how the drives were done, probably fdisk, because ultimately, they were bought NIB.

I looked at the Registry, and it's not "stuck" ...it's the proper autochk * entry.

some of those other articles look really scary.

Would conversion to NTFS and/or re-format help?
