Sounds like access to removable drives may not be allowed in policy.

You can try this, but you may be in for a reinstallation unless we can come up with something the equivalent of NTFSDOS.

In the RC, type:

set allowallpaths = true

You'll know immediately if it worked (It won't if a security template has not been applied to your machine).

Here is what it said ,it does not sound good " The set command is currently disabled. The set command is an optional recovery console command that can only be enabled by using the the security configuration and analysis snap-in."

You've got trouble. That message in itself is normal if you have not configured a security template for your machine. But unless you have access to NTFSDOS Pro or some other method of moving files to that NTFS partition, you are probably looking at a repair installation. After you get back to XP, you may want to make the policy changes that allow full access to the drive from the RC.

Here are directions for a repair:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

In a nutshell:

All you do is boot from the CD. When it asks if you want to repair and to press "R", don't. Continue with the installation just like you were installing for the first time.

You will then get a license agreement and it will ask you to press F8 to agree. Right after that screen, you will see a list of Windows installations that setup found. It will ask if you want to repair it. Read the directions on that page!!!

Then, you will actually press "R" this time and XP will re-install.

When done, you will be back to your familiar desktop with everything looking just like it did before. But all your Windows Updates are gone and you will need to get those again.

If you have any problems booting from CD, set the CD to boot earlier then the hard drive in BIOS setup, or come back for more help.

(Someone else will probably duplicate this post with a paste of a repeat of the directions and including steps to be sure you press "Next" when it appears, in case you would not have thought of that, but I'm sure you have enough information already . Just follow the prompts.)

Sigh...... I think I am cursed Elvandil, here is what it reads after I press f8 and agree to god knows what

Widows xp pro set up
the following list shows the existing partitions
and unpartitioned space on this computer
use the up and down keys to select

- ro set up windows xp on the selected item press enter
-to create a partition in the unpartitioned space press c
- to delete the selected partition press d

28314 mb disc 0 at id 0 on bus 0 on atapi mbr

cartition1[unknown] 29314mb[29313 mbfree

When I press enter it takes me to this screen

The partition is either too full, damaged, not formated,or formated with an incompatible file system.
To continue installing windows, set up must format the partition.

Then it goes on to ask me what file system i wish to format in

Hi Entrail
Try the following options

1. Slave the drive to another working system and copy the required file
2. A parallel installation of Windows XP to another drive and copy the file to the correct location
3. Perform a repair install of Windows XP.
