Every time I start up windows cmd.exe opens up and the command to shut down is made and it shuts down. I have temporarily solved this problem by renaming cmd.exe just to another name of cmg.exe so that it cannot be opened but I do run batch programs so have to keep changing the name when required. Any suggestions would be helpful as to sort this out.

Do Start > Run > MSCONFIG > Startup tab

Do you see an entry referencing CMD.com?

Possibly yourself or someone has your command prompt configured so that when cmd.exe (command.com) is executed that it shutdown your computer. Try downloading cmd.exe off of the net (or get it from one or your friends) and swap files.

CMD still shouldn't be starting at boot time.

Redhat's theory can be checked by doing Start > Run > cmg.exe and seeing if CMD opens or the PC shuts down.

Ive tried both of these suggestions and no luck, it is not under the startup tab in msconfig and the computer did not shutdown when i ran cmg.exe.

cmd.exe is present in both of these directories C:\WINDOWS\system32
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 is this correct.

Your "HotKeysCmds" is in "C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe" at [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] in the Registry. You think theres something upsetting the operation of the "HotKeysCmds" when CMD.exe is clicked? CMD.exe should be found here [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Nls\MUILanguages\RCV2\cmd.e xe] and is a REG_BINARY. What does Event Log show for the problem when it occurs, is there a DR Watson accessing problems on your machine? See evntcmd.exe [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Nls\MUILanguages\RCV2\evntc md.exe]. Can you Safe Boot AOK, (AlternateShell) [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\SafeBoot]. Is the Environment setting as such (ComSpec) [%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe]. Thats all I can figure right now.

Boots ok in safe mode, what do you mean by Dr Watson? I don't understand the registry to a great extent but could not find this

A quick look seems to point to the entry called "DRIVERS".

Run MSCONFIG, Startup tab (or use HiJackThis to delete this entry), and UNselect it.

Then reboot and see if the issue is gone.

You can also browse to \Windows\drivers.bat, right mouse, edit and copy/paste the contents back here (out of curiousity)

Tried deleting it from startup and it worked, is this likely to be a permanent fix or do i need drivers.bat to startup.

I will zip the drivers.bat and post it later.

You need to have a look inside of the BAT file and see what is there.

Obviously, if it results in a shutdown, it's up to no good and isn't required.

To post it, just rename it from BAT to TXT and attach it.
