#16 | Oh yeah immediately when powering up or restart button. I can only hit delete to get into cmos and then change things in bios settings perhaps there is a way to get the keyboard to take the F8 command as I feel this is the reason F2, F7, F8 etc isn't working. | | Former Administrator with 104,744 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2001 Experience: Advanced |

#17 | Bios does not control the F8 ability.

#21 | Well I enabled the USB so I can boot to safe mode, but now the desktop shows a black screen with the "safe mode" in each corner.
I see the light in the front panel continue to flicker indicating the CPU is processing and it continues to flicker every moment for hours! Perhaps it is trying to finalize a downloan like SP2 or something. I remember downloading that before this happened, but I thought it was done. Does anyone think I should put more memory in there? | | Distinguished Member with 9,437 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2003 Location: Houston, Texas Experience: Learning |

#22 | Sp2 will take some time to sort itself out after the reboot . . if you only have 64 Mg of memory it could take a very long time . . either leave it on for a week, or add memory | | Former Administrator with 104,744 posts. | | Join Date: Jan 2001 Experience: Advanced |

#24 | I took my system apart. It has Pentium 3, 933 mhz, 256 dram. Once again so anyone wanting to help can figure this out...I get a blank blue screen after the Windows Welcome greeting when starting the computer or rebooting. I can now get into safe mode hitting F8, but the screen goes blank black. The processor is attempting to do something cause I've had the computer on for 1.5 days and the light on the front panel indicates the processor is working at something, I can hear it about once a minute.
I need some DOS commands to open the Task Manager in DOS cause hitting Control Alt Delete at the blue screen isn't working it tells me the system administrator has turned off this function. But I can hit Control Alt Del during boot and get into DOS.
Can someone tell me what commands I can type in DOS to get in somewhere to see what is processing and kill it?
Thanks,

#28 | There is no DOS whatsoever in XP, so I'm not clear what you are referring to. And there is no Task Manager other than the one you see when Windows is running.
Where is your operating system installation media? Is it on a separate partition on your drive or did you get some recovery CD's with the machine?

#29 | that is almost certainly due to a hijacker
go to here and download 'Hijack This!' self installer. Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu and an optional shortcut on desktop.
Click on the entry in start menu or on the desktop to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results. | | Junior Member with 11 posts. | | Join Date: Sep 2005 Experience: Intermediate |

#30 | OK that last couple of replies tells me there are some who probably shouldn't be giving advice to anyone. Perhaps reading my post entirely might help. As far as DOS all computers have DOS. Please!
And if I could download anything I wouldn't be posting questions here! Read the original trouble.
Now, back to my last question. I have a separate computer that also came loaded with XP...I want to copy XP onto a CD so I can load that onto the troubled computer.
Who can tell me exactly what to copy to get the entire XP operating system burned onto a CD?? | | | |
