cd writer driver error code 39
my computer with xp was running fine until i found that it was not showing my cd drive.
i;ve checked the neccesary connection and they were all fine. the device manager shows the drive with a yellow sign giving error code 39 which says that driver is corrupt or missing. now my cd drive is a plug and play and does not have any driver bundled with it. uninstalling and reinstaling the drive wont help. xp detect the new hardware at the start up but again same problem.

i wanted to reinstall xp but since cd drive is not available i tried to run it from hard disk. but it too was not running. i dont know these problem are connected or not but please help.

Is you cd drive internal or external??

I've searched for a driver but can't seem to find one.

the drive is internal. the problem is not really specific to this drive becoz i've connected another drive of samsung and same problem.

i have xp backed up on my hard disk when i've tried to reinstall xp , after registration page it stopped. it might get corrupted but that'ss unlikely. i'm thinking whether this problem is related to my cd drive problem. are there any virus that can create this poblem?
otherwise may hard disk is working fine

i have a 810 mercury motherboard and p3 859mhz and 128mb ram

thanks for the help

Create a text file with the following stuff in it exactly as below and name it FIXCD.REG

Double click on the file and say yes to the merge into registry question.

----------------------- cut here, contents of FIXCD.REG -----------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdr4_2K]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdralw2k]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdudf]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UdfReadr]

long live johnwill. that solved the problem!

many many thanks to two of you. and anotherthing i would like to mention is that after trying johnwill's suggestion the cd drive showed under my computer but still it did not opened after double click. i went to properties tab and checked "enable digital audio in this drive" box. after that its fine now.

john will can you explain the registry file a bit. just a curiosity:-)
