Well, lets start by checking the services.

start > run > services.msc

Check to make sure the Help and Support service is started and its start type is set to Automatic

windows xp "help and support"
Thanks for help. The status column for help and support is blank (not started) and startup type is automatic. When I try to "start the service" I get message "Could not start the Help and Support service on local computer. Error 126 - the specified module could not be found."

Download this registry file and run it.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/helpsvc.reg

If that doesn't fix the problem go to this website:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm

And read the faq about Why doesn't Help and Support work?

Thanks again. I've tried the first suggestion but no success. I'll try working my way through the kellys-korner instructions and let you know what happens !
Later.
After working through all instructions I still cannot start help and support from the start menu. I get a message "Windows cannot find helpctr.exe.Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file .......".
However, I have now managed to start it by creating a shortcut to helpctr.exe on my desktop. Is there any way of getting it to work from the start menu ?
