Can't run cmd!
Hello,

I've had this problem for a while now...

When I type "cmd" into my run page I see it turn on and then dissapear really fast. If I put in a command like "netstat" it turns on then does nothing.

I see that rather then cmd.exe running, its cmd.com

Maybe someone can help?

Thanks!!

Sounds like a virus, as there are 2 flavors of M$'s DOS: command.com, which is the old DOS compactable interpreter/OS, and the newer cmd.exe, which ships with XP, and is a interpreter for XP.

You are infected with one of these viruses which drops a bunch of (hidden) COM files which will run before EXE files.

Picrate A
Picrate B
Picrate C

Alcra A
Alcra B

Follow through the removal process for both, and then it would be worthwhile to post back a HiJackThis log as a double check.

Hello,

I've checked my processes list and my systems32 folder to find the said files for both viruses/worms...

I found my cmd.exe in my systems32 folder and when I run it it runs fine. Except, when I type in a command it doesnt execute it, the cursor just skips a line.

I have AVG free edition for now and keep it updated...

My log, (I haven't restarted and haven't closed a process so its not right after reboot--Didnt wanna reboot because I have alot of stuff open)

Thanks

Remember that this is a weekend. You might want to ask a moderator to move this thread to the security forum.

In the meantime, just type start > run > cmd.exe

Windows XP is just an upgrade of Windows NT.

The link to the article refernences the old location and .exe.

For Windows XP use:

C:\WINDOWS\system32

And replace the file CMD.EXE.

There's infection in the log.

Click here to download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

· Install Ewido.
· During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
· Launch ewido.
· It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen.
· On the left side of the main screen click update.
· Click on Start and let it update.
· DO NOT run a scan yet.

Restart your computer into Safe Mode now.
(Start tapping the F8 key at Startup, before the Windows logo screen).
Perform the following steps in Safe Mode:

* Run Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK.
When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
Save the report to your desktop.

Reboot.

Post a new Hijack This log and the results of the Ewido scan.

I think you will also find that it is not corrupted files, but a virus that has dropped COM files that are being run instead. CMD and NETSTAT are 2 of them.

See this thread

So, even if Ewido cleans out the noted infection, double check for the presence of those COM files.
