I recently began having problems when restarting- 90% of desktop icons were gone,
replaced with generic program icons then, after a few seconds, windows explorer
would crash. When starting in safe mode the icons reappeared , so I used msconfig
/selective startup to quickly (lol) determine the cause. It's in a file called *[annie] with the item *'Frame Rate=666666' (*see below) the apparent culprit. With only this item disabled, startup appears to be OK.

My question is how and what should I do with this so I can resume normal
restart ( I'm still in selective startup )?

Also, any ideas on what [annie] could be for?

If I have to delete anything from the Win.ini file, do I just open it with Notepad and edit or delete or do I need to Regedit as well?

I use XP Pro-SP2 w/NOD32,Trojan Hunter, MS Antispyware, Spysweeper, WinPatrol, Firefox 1.5 -auto-updated and regularly run.

google turns up many people with that in their win.ini - i think it may be related to ati cards
try changing your win.ini from this:

to this:

save and reboot -
also does it point to any exes? (like "annie.exe") ?
try opening regedit and search for references to annie

aw crud scratch that- i just realized the ;msconfig FrameRate=666666
line means STOP this line from running, removing the ";msconfig" part will probably bring back your problem
still, try hunting down any exes that it points to

I ran regedit and found no [annie]'s, nor anything with a value of '666666' . The google info was right as I have ' 32MB ATI Rage 128 Ultra' .

Any tips on looking for exes? I did a search for the obvious -annie.exe with no results and tried to look in the ATI folder but, no good. I'm posting my entire Win.ini folder, as it appears to refer mostly to graphics in the hope of determining the effect of removing/altering the corrupted line.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge here but, what is the Win.ini for? What is the best way to save a copy of this if I need to delete anything? My graphics appear to be fine, although I know that doesn't mean anything. Should I try and change the value from '666666' to something else?

welp - a few things:
wini.ini is left over from older versions of windows - i believe it's needed for some older apps to work properly
just make a copy of it before you mess with it and name it win.BAK or some such...
goto msconfig and select normal startup, then open win.ini and put a ; in front of
FrameRate=666666
should look like this:

VideoDevice=0
AudioDevice=0
;FrameRate=666666
UseFrameRate=1
CaptureAudio=1
WantPreview=1

the semicolon says "ignore this line" which is exactly what the selective startup did -
save the file and reboot-
i dont think the annie thing is anything to worry about because it seems to be related to ati cards-
problem is i think it could be something else causing the problem

maybe try updating your ati drivers
