Here's a picture of my processes, im not sure how i got all of these, but my desktop has 23 usually running, this is my laptop which has 36 for some reason, does anyone know what these are, and if it is possible to keep some of them closed, how do i do it? thanks

You're CPU usage is low, and your Commit Charge is low as well. The programs running in the background aren't bogging your machine down. I don't see any junk on there.

I have 45 running processes on my computer, with a commit charge of 395/2463. Not bogging my system down.

I'd say you're ok.

Ok cool, i just figured the more crap running in the background the more stuff was starting to bog the machine down

To be quite honest, you shouldn't normally need anything loading up at startup.
My opinion of it is:

I'll run the program when " I " want to run it, not when windows wants to run it.
Upon my startup of windows, with nothing loading up at all, I have 20 processes running.
thats it.

well you should probly have your Anti Virus open thats all i have loading up at startup

So how do you know what you can disable from startup and what you cant? I can take a screen shot of my msconfig startup thing and maybe you can tell me which things i dont need turned on at startup?

that would be fine
Normally programs in your startup will appear as little icons in your task bar (near clock)
That is the only reason they startup, is to show you their pretty icons )
Also, for some people , it makes it a little easier to find if it sitting there ready to go...

Cool here is my msconfig, the one on the left is the top half, the one on the right is the other half, it wouldnt let me enlarge the window for some reason. Let me know what you think, thanks

if your NOT using AOL internet access, you can just uncheck everything in the startup tab

your bootup will be twice as fast and things will run smoother

in the service tab,

after you click on hide all microsoft services

the only services really needed are the virus scan ones, the firewall ones, anything that has to do with ipod

and lxccc (lexmark) HP (hp printers) anything with your printer in it, and anything that has the name of your wireless card on anything with the word wireless in it (depending on your card, there will be no services related to it because windows will handle it for you)

So all those things i can uncheck? The AVG ones are for my anti-virus, one i think is a graphic driver, and i dont know about the rest, will it mess anything up if i uncheck everything from the startup tab? Wont those programs and settings not start up with my laptop?

the startup isint really needed as much

but with services, you should leave any virus scan and firewall checked

and the best part about msconfig is that if you don't like the settings you can instantly undo them by rechecking their box
