could any one please tell me how to get into safe mode,cheesbal is helping me with a problem thank you

Hi

Restart your PC - when the PC beeps, start tapping the F8 key (or the appropriate key for your system), and use your arrow keys to move to the 'Safe Mode' option.

It's always the F8 key to get into safe mode in Windows, there is no other "appropriate" key. You can also use MSCONFIG to setup to start in safe mode, but then you have to go back and turn it off again.

Sorry John - have to disagree with you here. On my ASUS board it's F5. The F8 key merely allows me to choose the boot order. I've found this is the way on the more recent ASUS boards. Why they can't just keep to the standard F8 is beyond me.

The Safe Mode Booting Trick

1. Right-click My Computer on the Start menu and choose Properties.

2. On the Advanced tab, click the Settings button in the Startup And Recovery section.

3. In the Startup And Recovery dialog box, click the Edit button to open Boot.ini in Notepad.

4. Under [Operating Systems], select the entire line that contains the settings for your default operating system choice and copy it to the bottom of the list.

5. Append the following set of switches to the end of the newly copied line:

/safeboot:minimal

(Replace minimal with network if you want the shortcut to start Windows in Safe Mode with networking.)

6. Change the description in quotation marks to “Windows XP Safe Mode” and then save the file.

The F8 key to the BIOS might select the boot order for your BIOS, however the F8 key once the POST is finished and XP starts to boot will select safe mode. The BIOS doesn't determine what key is used for XP to enter safe mode, and it doesn't change because XP is running on different hardware. In truth, I think it's pretty stupid of Asus to use a key that conflicts with a standard assignment.
